Took my ponio for a saddle check yesterday. My saddle (wintec cob) is slightly too wide in front but perfect at the back. The saddler suggested I get a correction pad (the Mattes one) which costs £90

£90 for a numnah with a few pockets in

As an alternative she said I could use the thickest possible polypad, but that's not ideal.

Has anyone used one of these correction pads? Are there any cheaper alternatives out there? I cannot afford £90 at the moment!! Maybe I could make my own alternative??!

Can't you just put a smaller gullet in at the front???

as it's a wintec cob saddle we can only go down as far as a wide - he needs a medium-wide. We tried a standard wintec saddle but it was too small at the back.

Good alternative = fold up a bandage pad put it long ways across the shoulder and this will fill out the width until pony develops correct shoulder and back muscle. Problem with all these daft pads and thick numnahs etc is that you have no real connection and contact through the horses back and it is then more difficult to give the horse correct aids and get them working through and under properly.

I think prolite do one similar - I was told to use one for my mare with her saddle, as she was very wide but had a problem with the saddle slipping forward. To be fair I tried her in one and it did make a big difference, but same as you I thought they were so expensive and didnt bother. Needless to say I still dont have anything and just use a plain old numnah and touch wood its mostly fine.

MerryMaker - might try that, thanks for the tip. I guess I might need to cut it to fit a bit at the front?

alsxx - think the prolite one will also be hugely expensive!! I could see the saddle was pinching a bit when i rode with no numnah, so think it does need something pretty thick

Hmmm... I never really cut mine, if you fold it lengthways it becomes like a long rectangular shape to put over the shoulders behind the withers, but I guess you could cut it if it helps the fit
