corss country today! and stupid hat rule!!

went xc today to a local riding club. hailed most of the day, was cold cold cold and windy! BUT flint did go clear over the course with Playboy in the pairs xc so me and sam were really happy with them. new rule to the club is that you must wear a jockey skull when competing cross country...which is fine, but was not noted on the website...so i turned up with my champion vent air which i have used before and was told i couldnt use my up to standard hat i had to use the hat that was supplied by them, a jockey skull, no silk which 1) made me look like a beginner and 2) a pratt! not only had it got a rubber chinstrap it was also made in 1988! i did compete in it, abit risky but i trust flint cross country and we came back safe but wouldnt or shouldnt they allow you to wear your hat thats up to standard without a colapsable peak??? any thoughts...
 
The PC gave you a hat made in 1988 with a rubber chinstrap

personally there is no WAY I would have worn it, vanity aside! Equally, there is no way I would XC in a ventair!

You need to get yourself a proper skull cap!
 
i do weezy, but i have always competed there in my ventair hat 93rd pic in sig)and when i looked on the website last night there was nothing to say i still couldnt. suppose because no one has ever pointed out before that i couldnt i took it for granted. they also didnt check if i had my body protector on which i would of thought would of been a main proirity. looking back i i did take a big risk shoyud anything of happened (slaps wrist) but after the mamonth drive there i couldnt bear to walk away!

the only time ive worn my jockey skull was when ive been team chasing. i went over a BE course (not BE event though) in my vent air

I came off my psychobeastrodeomonster wearing a fixed peak hat... long story but I was somersaulted quite high in the air and landed face down on the hats peak. I was unconscious for 3 full minutes (doesn't sound like long but for those with me apparently it felt long!) and then talked absolute bollox for a few hours whilst sat in A&E.
 
Peaks always worry me on hats they really need to be detachable like on motorcycle helmets. As for chinstraps I think they're a load of non-sense, tell me when you've damaged your chin after falling off a bike or a horse -never.

I went xc there today, and had the same problem! We had to wait an hour before we could go round for my mate's mum to bring some of their old hats up from home. When I stated it was not on their website, the woman replied that it was, but when I checked when I got home it wasn't.

was very annoyed cause it was freezing cold and windy and we just wanted to get round.
 
flintus is being better behaved but still not very nice on the ground at the mo! i prefer to be on him!!
i didnt want to mention where it was but let say it was rugby that i went to!! i wasnt impressed and just checking the wbsite it still isnt on there. i find it quite irresponisble for them to be able to do that although its not a bad run place at all. but if rules are rules they need to be stated before not when you arrive! if i hadnt of been able to use that hat i would of had and hour and 15 mins wasted journey!
 
If they really did make you wear an 1988 hat then I think you need to do some kind of serious complaining to someone somewhere... 1988 hats are NO WAY safe by todays standards

Yep I have one and I was not to go XC in it either, however if I was to come off and I would do a lot of damage to my head, due to the peak.

out of interest are you sure it was 1998 which was they year the PAS015 standard came into existence or 1997 when the EN 1384 did? the year in the hat will relate to the standard not the year it was made. Mine says 1998 and 1997 in it (due to above standards) but I only bought it 8 months ago.
 
it was still prob made about 1995 ish as the 1988 standards lasted until 1998 so anything in the middle would have been 1988 stamped. Either way they should never have given you it to wear and would be almost certain that doing so would invalidated the insurance cover they had which they were trying to protect by not allowing you to ride in a fixed peak!
 
I've only been x-country once in recent years....and i went round in my Champion Ventair (with peak
tongue.gif
). The daft thing is, the Ventair with peak is exactly the same as the Ventair skull cap...and the peak is soft anyway so would do you no real harm in the case of a fall

As for making you wear a 1988 hat...well...that is just plain ridiculous, and i would probably have said something to them. Although they probably thought they were helping you out by supplying a different hat

I wouldn't have ridden, regardless of how far I had driven - I have a 1988 standard hat, love it to pieces, it was pretty much the only hat I taught in (with my PAS015 nearby if I needed to ride for any reason) because it was so light. There isn't a cat in hell's chance I would have jumped never mind XC in it! I also wouldn't XC in a fixed peak tho, whether the orgaizers said I could or not - it's limitation of risks - it's dangerous enough as it is, without compounding it by wearing equipment not designed for it.

BB - Rubber chin cups were taken off the hats because of broken jaws caused by them I believe, if the hat moves suddenly one way, the chin cup can force the jaw back, breaking it.
 
Well I think its crazy they made you wear an old hat! Thats even worse than letting you go with a fixed peak!

Saying that though, I thought everyone knew you werent meant to use fixed peaks for XC? Ive never thought of it as even being a rule, more that its just expected?! Id never do XC without a jockey.
