cortaflex = canibalism?

Hello there. Just wondering if anyone here has done any research on cortaflex supplement as I have just started using it for my lad and was advised tonight (by the resident know it all) that cortaflex contains mushed up bits of other animals and couldn't be good for them as horses weren't designed to eat other animals. !:o
Although, whilst listening to this I happily sprinkled into b's bucket, just to prove a point (i'm getting a bit fed up of her thinking she know how to look after everyones horses better than them). Obviously, I had a good study of the tub after she had gone. well it does say it contain mammilian (sp?) extract and feeding it to something or other (cows I think) was prohibited.

What's the score, do I change my suppliment (in secret) or carry on regardless. Any thoughts/opinions/experience on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Main source of Chondrotin is sharks cartilage aparently. Depends how you feel about the whole thing. Cattle are excluded from the feed thingy because of BSE I seem to remember that was one effect of the whole crisis. Not sure about other animal feeds, think there may still be some animal product in many other varieties although that may have changed for the same reasons. Contact the manufacturers about it they should be used to dealing with that kind of enqury. The blue chip dynamic claims to be free of all ethical issues (no chondrotin) so perhapes an alternative, it also might work out cheaper but that will keep Miss Knowitall off your back should you deceide to change!

It is only canabalism if it is the same species. Just thought I would mention that!

Mamillian refers to fish/whales mammals I beleive. Some people prefer not to give their horses cod liver oil and use linseed etc same principle I think. You could use newmarket joint supplement it is pure glucosomine and sprinkle some cortaflex in her cup of tea to make yourself feel better.lol but then it does say dont feed to cows!!!!!!!!

As has been said, it depends how you feel about such things. You have to weigh up the benifit to your horse VS the whole natural/unnatural thing. Bear in mind that anything a human does with a horse is un-natural.

The research and development aspect of many comercial suplements etc upsets some people. They are tested on horses and then the horses are killed and disected to see what effect the product has. You can't realy get away from it.

Sorry to disappoint, but a shark is a fish so not mammalian. Chances of it being mushed up whales is slim. So it's a bit dodgy, as its probably readily available animals - cows, sheep & horses!!!

Definition for you:
mammalian - any warm-blooded vertebrate having the skin more or less covered with hair; young are born alive except for the small subclass of monotremes and nourished with milk

I was under the impression that the main source of chondroitin for these sorts of supplements was bovine cartilage?

Yup I was too - which is probably why you should not feed cortaflex to cows

Chondroitin has two sources... shark cartilage and pig trachea (crushed). i'm assuming that Cortaflex use the latter. I hope that that helps you?

Sorry I couldn't get online much over the weekend to keep up this thread, but the sun was shining for once, so I was outside as much as poss.

Anyhoo, thanks so much for your replies. PMSL at Cellie, yes I would sprinkle into tea, but as you say, you shouldn't feed to cows and also it's too expensive.

I don't like the idea of the animal product contents (which ever animals), but hey hey, like yorkshire lass says, everything we do to/for horses is unnatural so it's only right we help them as much as poss,

As long as the product is good for my horse, then I think I'll stick with it.

Cheers for your views!!.
