Hi, i've got a horse on Cortaflex through vets advice however people have said to use Glucosamine plus MSM instead because it's alot cheaper and does the same thing.
Your thoughts, advice and experiences appreciated please.

I have mine on Topspec 10:10 joint supplement which I think is the one with MSM and was recommended by our physio. I was put off Cortaflex due to some of the ingredients being 'derived from mammalian tissue'. just didn't fancy feeding that to my horse.

No idea if what I have is cheaper or any better/the same as cortaflex. We haven't finished the first tub yet and I am not sure how long you have to feed it before you can expect any changes. Having said that my horse essentially wasn't actually stiff but he is 18 and I still compete him so I am feeding it more as a preventative measure and to help keep him supple.

I'v bin trying, long term on various horses, various joint supplements and I think the best is cortaflex liquid. It is expensive, but from what I see and feel on my horses it is the one that works best. I have the retired old man on cortaflex powder. .

Having said that there are better ones, u shud b a ble to get them thro your vet such as mobifor or newmarket supp.

It does not have all the stuff that cortaflex does and it depends on why you are feeding it - preventative, old age, damage etc.

I did use it along with linseed on my old clydie and it seemed to work as well as the cortaflex, but the linseed is very good for still old joints.

I am now using Feedmarks Extraflex HA on our young clydie as a preventative - she is a big girl and being show bred, very close behind. Not too bad a cost and does seem to have all that is recommeded for joint health and in it.

My mare is on cortaflex and I feel it works really well but I have heard of Hack Up Premium Glucosamine HCL which is cheaper and has good reviews.

our old boy is on cortaflex and mick is on glucosamine - gold label.

I wont use the glucosamine with msm as it made mick fizzy. he is an easily fizzed horse though.

Eeeeeeeek gosh, never thought of that.

Thanks everyone for your replies, it's good to know who uses what and how they get on with it.

Well, my old girl was on box rest for a long time (about 8-10 months in total) and at the age of 20+ i put her on the glucosamine + msm (think it was £15 a tub) - and it made a real difference to her, and when she went out for walks on the lead rein was much looser after a month and a half of being on this stuff - i couldnt afford the Cortaflex - but would definitely use the cheapy one again!
