Are these joint injections legaL?and how long do they last in a horses system.?I know theres all kinds of potions avail on the market for horses and this is one of them ive heard(thro grape-vine) of people using when selling horses!(is it on the black market or do uk vets give it out?) I mean, who can you trust when buying a horse with all these medicines around???? Its just so risky now!!

Cortisone injections are used to treat a variety of conditions/injuries, and no they are not illegal.

The length of time they work for varies greatly, from a matter of weeks to forever.

In some cases I am under no illusion that people will administer a cortisone injection in order to get a horse sound enough to sell on, the cortisone in itself isn't illegal but if you could prove this was done to cover up an injury then you could probably make a legal case for being sold an unsuitable horse.

Getting the proof is another story though

yes it can be traced if bloods taken at time of vetting(you pay another £130 ish to have bloods tested for different substances),Anyone buying a horse should pay the extra to have a horse vetted and bloods taken.i just wouldnt trust anyone anymore(unless good friends) .

my vet took bloods from my horse when I had her vetted. They werent tested or anything, but I think they do it and keep a sample so that if anything had been wrong they could have tested them..........saying that, I dont know how long the samples are 'good' for?

Bloods kept for 6 mths at newmarket(vets send them away on day of vetting),gives buyer time to find any vices, unsoundness,as there are obv substances that mask unsoundness/vices!!!

I know plenty of horses that are injected every 6 weeks to keep them sound (top event horses) so whilst it will show up in a blood test its not illegal.

Surely this would be uncovered when asking about the potential horse's veterinary history?? I've bought both my horses privately but I went into the vet history with a fine tooth comb - the seller has to disclose this if asked - and any exclusions- or they could be prosecuted. I did view a lovely horse - until my probing uncovered that it had had loads of arthritic problems and just about everything had been excluded!!! I suppose if they haven't had the horse long its diificult, but I only bought from long-term owners.

Just a note re bloods being stored at Newmarket. Although they *can* be stored for up to 6 months its not always the case. Depending on the volume of bloods Newmarket are asked to store at any one time it can be for as little as 3months.

I learn't this the hard way unfortunatly. SO if there is any question over the soundeness of your horse get the bloods tested straight away!
