This is a bit of a weird question but the girl who I am "teaching" to ride (more helping out with a few issues on my old dressage pony) wants to buy a pony. But her parents said she has to get a list of monthly costs..... so of course i offered to do this for her (silly silly me!)!! My costs are very low because i live on a farm and i dont really pay for much of my bedding etc.... but i was wondering if you guys could give me a break down of what you spend on your horses each month... if that isnt to rude o ask of course!! I just want to be able to give them some reasonably round figures, we are looking at somewhere between a hack and show pony.

Haha.... well... lets just say.... her mummy and daddy probably dont care how much it costs.... but they just want an excuse not to have a pony churning up their front paddock! They pay me to mow it! When i offered to graze it for them, funnily enough they said no! If you get my drift!

Mine (horse at grass):

Livery £60 a month
Farrier £10 a month (unshod, just trimmed)
Hay £10 a month
Insurance £45 a month
Feed and Supplements: £15 a month

So about £140 a month

Need to think about one off costs too like vet bills, vaccinations, tag repairs, etc.

livery diy £20 a week = £80 a month
bedding £6 a week = £24 a month
haylage £5 a week = £20 a month
worming = £5 a month
feed = about £20 a month
shows= £30 a month
treat, bits and pieces i buy £30 a month
insurance=£20 a month
equals £230 a month without shoes, tack and vets

They wouldnt be paying livery, but the pony would be shod probably. So i think £140 as a ball park figure probs isnt too far off.

You can get cheaper insurance, but my horse is insured to the hilt with a very low excess. I'd rather pay extra each month than be out of pocket on a claim.

I think that is very wise, when i get my next horse im going to go from rider only (this was for work) to the whole caboodle... leaving nothing uninsured because i really cant afford it when things do go wrong!

Only had him insured three months when he was injured and is now looking at a very expensive op. With a low excess I don't have to worry too much. Definitely worth it IMO.

Yer, unfortunately when they break... they manage to do it in style... and the cost is unbelievable! I have just insured my dog, im 17 and cant afford to risk her causing/being involved in an accident. She is an escape artist.... so im not risking it!

If the parents can afford to run & maintain another car then they should be able to keep a horse, that's the kind of money it costs to keep one.
