I am writing this as I feel many of your readers may benefit from my cost cutting experience.

For many owners the economic downturn brought about a serious bit of belt tightening. The weak pound was driving the cost of the staples, feed and bedding, ever higher. For many years I have bedded my horses on shavings and shredded rape straw. Although pleased with the performance I needed to look at economical alternatives.

I came across a product which I had never considered before - Every year the UK consumes over ten billion eggs so they need a lot boxes. Strangely enough, unless you are a Blue Peter fan, there are not too many uses for the old boxes. Re-cycled and shredded the former egg boxes now provide bedding for my horses. The upside is that my costs have been reduced by 50%, they are more absorbent, the beds are really soft, odour is reduced considerably and when composted they break down much faster than shavings or straw. The only down side is the mixture of colours, but my horses don’t mind at all !

When I first discovered this product I decided to trial it for 3 months and have not been disappointed and I will not go back to any other bedding. Friends who have started using this are also delighted. Even if you mix it with shavings there are savings to be made. It really is a great product. I must stress I do not work for the company but really appreciate their generousity and superb value for money. All my horses, cats etc love this bedding.
