Evening all, can anyone tell me how much is the going rate for a good part-time groom. I would be looking for somebody to do morning and evening stables (bring in and feed, check/groom, poo pick, change rugs) for 1 horse plus one pony, 3 times per week and to ride out 1 horse twice a week.

Plus any advice, i.e. things to ask, look out for etc etc.

I charge £10 per hour freelancing and that inc petrol. Make sure you get refs as you don't want someone who will take forever to do simple tasks. For that reason I would choose an experienced freelance groom who knows how to organise a yard ensuring you get value for money as opposed to a less experienced person who you wouldn't perhaps have to pay as much but chances are they will take longer.

I have a client who has 3 horses and to feed, skip out, change rugs, pick out feet, turnout, sweep yard is 30 minutes but I still charge £10 as it wouldn't be worth travelling 15 minutes for only half an hour.

I am paid £7.50 per hour, and I have sole charge of my yo's 2 horses. I muck out, turn out, groom, rug Change and bring them in and feed. (Not necessarily in that order!) YO just comes out and rides when she wants.

I am paid over minimum wage.

I work approx 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. Depending on time of year (ie winter/hunting) I work longer, Summer ( less horses) I work less. There may be the odd show (if number of horses requires me to go) and I do get a few things in kind such as rugs, Gillets, Jackets and the loan of a saddle to back my horse in :) Love my Job :)

Duties vary, but mostly Mucking out 3-7 stables, grooming, turn out/bring in, washing off, show/hunt prep, the odd ride. Never a dull moment :)
