Could anyone advise me on the general cost of constructing an outdoor arena. Probably as simple and as basic as it gets, 20x40, cheapest surface but with decent drainage, no lighting needed. I just haven't got any idea and our farmer yard owner has been asking after we've been pestering him about one for ages!!
Thanks

I'm about to do the same - cheapest I can get it down to is just under £20K for silica sand and rubber. Pricey. I'm in north Wales.

weve been quite lucky with our sand school which is being done as we speak...we have had to bring one side up 8ft just to level it but it will be fab when finished...we decided on building a 60 x 40 and have managed to get the costs down by doing it ourselves.

we have a local contractor who loves driving his digger and swing shovel so he comes over and plays. we have had our drainage layers donated by the local building site.they are digging out the side of a cliff so have brought all the shillit to us to go on our shillity cliff side...thus reducing the amount of drainage we need..we decided on a wood fibre surface due to where we are and the location of the school, we can roll it down and keep it compacted and it will only need refilling every three years.(i felt sand would return to the beach below!!) the surface is costing us just under 3 grand for it all...(chris sells the stuff so we have a good deal and we live about 10 miles from the deopt!!)...so the m ost expensive bit will be the fencing. one side will need to be fenced, it overhangs a cliff and 2 chalets but our freindly digger driver has built banks all the way round the school so it is sheltered....

we got our plans from jackson arenas, they seem to be comparitivly priced...however if you can do alot of it yourselves you can get the price down like we have!!

we now have a nearly level hole in the ground...still need about 300 tonnes of shillit to make it perfectly level..we are all hanging on and cant wait!!

I had a cushionride arena installed in December 2007. It's unfenced & has got proper drainage, & it cost £11,600.

Oooh makes my quote sound cheap at just over £3k thats just for digging out, banks and sand. Thats 40m x 25m. It on a slope and may cost an extra £1k if he needs to put extra in to make it level

for your aggregate level you could keep your costs down by cotacting local council and getting them to dump the road surfaces they have dug up(money saving option) i did that as needed loads, my arena is 60x27m and think it was bout 10-11k with surface and fencing. also sourced local guy that sold his sand and bought direct hiring a lorry. just ideas if your on a budget

Also, if you have the space and can squeeze a bit larger arena out of the budget, you will appreciate it in the long term.

Our yard menage is 25m x 40, and the extra 5m really helps with jumping ... if you can go longer, you'll get better grids too.

Also if you don't have to have it fenced to the edge, it gives the feeling of being more spacious, as you don't have to worry about your knees!

If you want t jump a lot try to go for a square...it really works well for lots of different tracks. We've got a 25x55 but I'm going to go for a 40x40 square next...
