Hi, my 6yo ISH tried to jump out of his field 3 weeks ago and managed to get the fence caught round his near fore.

He has been on box rest ever since with a pressure bandage on his cut leg which seems to be healing as I would expect.

He had some swelling on the inside of is hock on his back leg which the vet thought was cellulitis so he had been on antibiotics twice a day and daily walk and icing. There is no real improvement so we have now tried a pressage bandage but no change now in 48 hours.

The vet suggested x-ray and ultrasound scan to get to the bottom of it. I'm claiming through my insurance (Petplan) but want to work out how much these scans will cost so I can work out if I need to start worrying about the limit my insurance will pay. I've never had to claim before so am probably worrying for nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

He will be having the scans and any other treatment required no matter what – I just want to be sensible and start working out how much extra cash I may need to find!

Many thanks!

If you have £5k vets fees with Pet Plan I should think you wont be anywhere near your limit! I've been borderline a number of times but that was with referral for surgery, xrays, scintigraphy (bone scan=£1500!!) physio, hospitalisation and numerous visits.

Had a mare who did similar was on box rest for weeks and weeks with a pressure bandage for a cut, was scanned and lots of visits for dressing changes, antibiotics etc and was just under £2k

Had a gelding who did his DDFT, emergency vets visit, pressure bandage, scans and xrays plus repeat scans was just under £600 I think

Just make sure your vets know your insurance limit, in my experience they're pretty good at keeping it well below if they can!

I had an ultra sound done about 18 months ago & it was £150 (although I was lucky & got it free as they had a rep showing his off machine at the clinic that day so they used my horse as a guinea pig)

A fellow livery had a leg x-ray done recently (at the yard not the clinic) & I think it was about £200.

Good luck & I hope you don't need the scans done.

I recently had one ultrasound scanned that was £170, he was quiet and needed no sedation, xrays are generally around £40 per plate so will depend on how many required, add on the cost of call out if done at your yard but they are usually better quality if taken in to be done.

Thanks everyone - your replies have been really useful - I do have the 5k with Petplan so I now know I don't need to start to look for things to sell!

Looks like my boy will need to go for the scans but I'd rather be safe than sorry so I'm happy to have them done.

Thanks again!

When Mysti had colic ultrasound scans were £200/£300ish each. Stomach/bowels/internal organs all checked so very long scans. Done at the vet hospital so no call out fees on top luckily although already had a bank holiday call out charge that was almost as bad as the scans .. Joy!!
