Harry is rising 4 this year and I'm hoping to get him backed in the spring. I've been quoted £130 per week, we're thinking he'll need 2-3 weeks to get him walking and troting, possible a little canter, and hacking out on his own *fingers crossed*

Is that price good/bad/the usual? I'm in Somerset. Thanks :)

Hi, I've been looking into this as I'm not sure yet as to whether doing my girl myself or not.

That seems about normal I would say. It seems to be between £100 - £150 a week in most areas, from what I can gather.

Sorry, should have said we've said 2-3 weeks because he's done most things already. He's been tacked up, taken for walks with tack on, lunged with tack on and stirrups hanging down, lightly sat on and walked around (by small rider) and is pretty much at the point for the riding to happen. Obviously, if he needs longer, he will get longer :)

Sounds like you have done most off it why not follow it through?
When my foal is old enough I would like to do it all myself

I don't have any experience of breaking in youngsters and I don't want to mess him up by doing it wrong. I feel it will be better for him to go someone who knows what they're doing and make sure he's started off the right way :)

I did exactly the same as you. I did the lungeing/long reining tack and first sit then sent away for 2 weeks (£130 P/W) to do walk/trot canter and hack as we dont have a school and our yards on a busyish road so wanted him to learn them in a more controlled enviroment
Worked out really well for us. He came back into work at xmas and will hack up and down the roads happily and walk/trot/canter in the school - he is still green tho lol

Oh brill, always nice to hear that others have done the same :) Most of our hacking is on country roads and I can't always guarantee having someone to hack with so really hoping we can get him happy going on his own. He's quite happy to go for walks and hang out in his field on his own so hoping that's a good indication.

Mine was £230 per week but she did a really good job and is very well known and after looking at others wouldn't have sent him anywhere else

Dont mean to offend anymore but am a great believer you get what you pay for, Cant see how anyone can do it for £60 p/w and would be worried by standard of breaking in/backing.

cost me £165 per week.
I could only afford for mine lad to be there for 3 weeks but they did an excellent job in that time and i carried on with lessons at home once he was back.

Deefa - It really is :D I've had him since 18 months and he's come so far in the last 2 years. When I think back to the bolshy, rude horse that I was scared to lead because he would tank off and could not get near in the field, I cannot believe he is the same horse. He now follows me like a puppy and always listens, he's just such a star.

I'm really hoping he will love ridden work and have everything crossed that he will take to it easily :)

Paint Me Proud - I'm planning on taking lessons with him once he comes back. The lady doing it will also come over and ride him for me, make sure we're working in the right direction. So exciting!
