OK so just been to Pets at Home to pick up Finns weeks food...

and it got me wondering... how much people pay?

Cost for basic meal... e.g.... not treats/extras...

Finn, Rhodesian Ridgeback, 4.5months old...

currently consumes... 6 Nature Diet Sachets a day @ 64p

= £3.84 a day
= £26.88 a week
= £107.52 a month (based on 4 weeks)

Plus ad-lib biscuits overnight!!!!

Tinker, Collie x Whippet (Lurcher) 15months old...

currently consumes... 2 Nature Diet Sachets a day @ 64p

= £1.28 a day
= £8.96 a week
= £35.84 a month (based on 4 weeks)

Plus ad-lib biscuits overnight!!!!

Finn - 1 years food = £1397.76
Tinker - 1 years food = £465.92

So a grand total for both dogs basic diets for a YEAR at £1863.68!!! ouch!!!

That proves keeping a dog isn't cheap!!! LOL!!

What do yours cost?

Mine's a lab ... the cob of the dog world, lives on fresh air!
He has 1/3 of a pack of meat twice a day (each pack cost 62p) and Beta junior complete kibble, large sack cost £25 and will last about 2 months.

So he costs about £25 a month to feed !

My 2 have Arden Grange- it's normally about £40 for a big bag which lasts ages (about 3 months for both dogs!), but I get it from someone for £25 a time. My dogs are only dinky though- the cocker could get fat just thinking about food and although the little black hearthrug-type dog is bigger, and on the go all day every day, she does well on quite little food because she is built like a whippet under all the hair.

She has James Wellbeloved kibble for breakfast, and a 7.5kg bag lasts about a month and costs £18 or thereabouts. One tin of food, approx 35p, for dinner. So approx £30 per month, or £360 per year. Older dogs do cost less to feed generally than puppies, who eat a lot for their size and have more specific requirements.

I give mine Bakers Complete - one sack costs £25 and lsts me about 2 months so a grand total of £300 for two dogs - mine are a 9 year old lurcher and a 4 month old lurcher. Only 19inch lurchers so fairly small

Not including treats about £30.00 a month and he is a giant breed! Thankfully the dirty little so and so catches a lot of rabbits he scoffs and likes dirty cheap food. Used to have him on Eukanuba but he hated it and is now on Pascoes country gold. A sack of that lasts around 3 weeks (15kg) he also has some tinned stiff (around a table spoon chucked in) He hates dog biscuits...but post operative or anaesthetic he only wants best basmati rice and needs around 2 roast chickens a day!
Thankfully quite rare.

1 sack of James Wellbeloved per week = £36.00
1 box of minced raw food per week = £9.00
dog chews etc per week = £5.00
total = £50.00 per week or £200 per month or £2,400 per year

that's for 7 Belgian Shepherd Dogs but does't include show entries/vets fees etc etc ....

One bag of james wellbeloved Kibble (am and lunch) £6.15 per month (7.5 kg) He haven't finished this bag yet so i had it 6 weeks.

Two bags of Nature menu (frozen raw meat with vegs) 2.15 a bag. For suppers.... £4.30 total

= £10.45 per month For wee 5kg ish 17 week old Jack russell Pup

But he is seriously cute isn't he?! The adult RR at the livery yard is fed really cheap stuff and thrives on it, so just hold on until maturity

My two eat Hills Science Diet simply cos I get it at 'VAT free breeders rates' - £20 a sack instead of the usual £40-£50 per sack

Each sack lasts about 3 weeks.

I haven't the slightest idea how much my dogs cost to keep. I have 2 collies and 1 Belgian Shepherd and I buy:

Pedigree Complete

Soft chewies - which they each have 4 of per day.

NZ Green Lipped Mussels - old one gets 1 a day.

Raw meat - no cost as generally rubbish cut off from our cuts of meat.

Hard chewies - 1 per day each.

Bones - 15 are thrown out to them per month; no cost as leftovers from the cow we buy for freezer.

BTW - Finn is looking absolutely gorgeous!!!

Mad how the cost varies on feeding really!!

Finn will certainly be changing diets when he's older... just now I want to give him the best I can get!! I really wanted to do the BARF diet - but it's the time... so was told NatureDiet was the next best thing!!

Gosh hard to say really, one bag of 15 kg dog food £8 probably lasts about one month between the Ghound and the English Mastiff!!! They do get left overs though to top up sometimes. They also have two weetabix each in the morning so nothing too costly there either!

[/ QUOTE ]English Mastiff?!? I beg your pardon?!? When did this pooch appear and why was I unaware of him/her? Where are the pictures?

Size often belies the appetite....Obviously when a puppy the best is brilliant as joints and growth need it. When fully grown a big dog often eats proportionately less than it's size would have you think.
My dog works very hard and is 84.7KG at the moment....He eats relatively little and costs little in food. Most of the excess is made up with bones and treats which are fairly uneccessary.
However...If the food bill don't get ya...the vet's bill will!!!!
Your dog is absolutely stunning by the way KJFIT!

Where do you get your James Wellbeloved from? All the feed merchants and farm suppliers round here, which are usually the cheapest, charge that amount for a 2.5kg bag, and I pay around £18 for a 7.5kg bag. It may be worth a trip to your supplier!

Lol he is my OH's dog who was a rescue, he likes to be called an English Mastiff but is more of a cut and shut front end EM style back end more spindly and Great Dane. His mother obviously wasnt picky! He is getting on a bit now I am afraid and his cow hocked back end is letting him down a bit. Will dig out a picture for you tomorrow if you wish.

I get my dog food delivered from the other side of Leeds, a great place called The Blue Barn at Otley.

I have 2 fully grown st bernards and they go through 6 15kg sacks of Dr Johns Gold dry food in about 4-5 weeks.

This costs me approx £45 including delivery.
