cost of gelding a yearling.

Up here i think it's between £100-£150. Not sure how different it'll be where you are though

mine was £500.... was initially quotes £200 but "complications" arose. I would double check when you book because I was pretty gutted having to find that extra £300

oh dear,seems lots of complications.
any tips on do`s and dont`s please?
also, when is the best time of year?

I paid between £150 and £200 for each of my three boys. I bought them all as young colts and had each of them gelded in the early spring (March/April time) after their first winter. Operation was done with horse standing up under local anasthetic.

If I had to get another one gelded, I'd go for early spring again. This time of year there is more likely to be more turnout time starting to become available (especially if your yard has turnout restrictions over the winter) - and gentle movement (i.e. turnout!) is ideal for reducing the post-op swelling. But also in early spring the weather should be starting to warm up (with a bit of luck - ok we're British - we know it's not going to happen!) BUT the most important thing about early spring is that there aren't yet too many flies about. Leave it till later in the summer and there'll be flies galore investigating the wound and potentially causing problems.

When my 3 year old colt needed gelding I used the Yellow Pages and called the 4 or 5 equine vets in my vacinity and asked for their price for gelding. They varied wildly (for a gelding using the same method of anaesthesia), ranging from £98 and £220 for a basic, straighforward procedure. I opted for the £110 one and the vet did a very good job.

I'd always ring around and use a dedicated equine vet.
