Im currently looking into buying a youngster, and although i have the experience to back a horse, it is just me who would be doing it and im not keen on the idea as i always like to have an extra pair of hands on the ground so i am looking at prices for getting a horse professionally backed, i would say from light handling, so leading on a headcollar, picking feet up, grooming etc, to being backed and having done w/t/c under saddle and done some hacking too, what would you pay for that service? Looking at ID types so around 16hh, and im based on the Nottingham/Derbyshire border if that makes any difference or if anyone can reccomend someone

I have paid £180 + VAT a week for Will and Ginnie Turnbull in Leics., they do an amazing job, and have a six month waiting list. Obviously the price depends on how long it takes, I know another brilliant guy for backing in Worcester, and he charges £200 a week, but I'd assume Leics was more in your area.

I paid £220/week and it was 8 weeks raw from the stud to W/T/C under saddle and hacking alone on a fairly sharp/sensitive one

Another vote for the Turnbulls - also, Glen Morris and Lucy Smith in Wymeswold. Finally, there's John.....I'm having a real senior moment here - he used to work for Vere Phillipps and is just down the road from him; his dad supplied hunters to Prince Charles and .......help me, someone...???

I would allow £250 a week and reckon on 6 - 10 weeks, depending on how straightforward the horse is and how competent you are - ie at what stage you want the horse to be before you take over.

Will depend on the job you want doing. I’ve seen prices from £120 to £300pw advertised.

You could cut your costs down by doing all the prelim work yourself then just get them to do the ‘backing’ as it were?
