Hi all,

I've been offered the horse that I currently part-loan, for full-loan. It will be staying at the current yard where the owner also keeps her other horse.

My question is.... Should I be expecting to take full financial responsibility for the horse?
On discussion with the owner she mentioned I'd be paying for:
Livery
Insurance & excess if needed
Farrier
Dentist
Jabs & worming etc
Feed
Straw & Hay as needed

The horse has reasonably new rugs and saddle / tack.

Is there any other expence I should be considering asking about?
Also, what are your thoughts of loaning a horse when it is staying at the same yard as owner?

Ah yes, back person as and when ... don't know how much that would be tho!
Does insurance only cover so much of the vets fees? I thought if there was insurance the only expense would be the excess if she became ill or injured!

I was an owner who loaned - the horse had to stay with his brother on the yard - and I made a pact that I wouldnt talk about how my loaner was getting on with fellow liveries. It was made easier for me as I wasnt coping with my boy, and loaner can - I really couldn't comment . My loaner and boy are still happy together. But to be honest, while Im truely delighted it has worked out, it did hurt... a lot at times, particularly when other people made comments about them in front of me. In the end, I have moved yard, for some other reasons, but it was a factor in the choice to move. But my loaner is a lovely person, and I get updates/photos etc.

It might be different because you will be on the same yard as the owner but I would have thought the owner would pay for insurance to ensure the horse was covered and had the cover they would want. I know when I considered loaning my horse I thought I'd continue to pay the insurance for those reasons. You would of course need rider insurance for you.

Am I the only person on here that doesn't have 'the back man' on speed dial??
I think people can become far too dependant on these people, of course they have a purpose and a place. But unless there was an initial back issue I would not be calling them out every 6 months (unless horse is changing shape dramatically, in which case I would recommend a decent saddler rather than the mysterious 'back man')

Sorry OP, had a bit of a rant there!

I'm the same. First point of contact if theres an issue is my god like vet. I've seen too many 'back problems' being diagnosed as muscular when actually theres something else going on!
