cost of horses PTS

Hi have just read the sad story obout the horse dumped dead at upminster due to cost. I would like to say Not all vets sting you to have your horse pts. Last March our lovely big horse got colic late Saturday night we called our local vets but he had to go through to Oakham Veterinary Hospital. We arrived around 2am Sunday and after a few test it was decided that he would not survive the opp and was pts. The bill for a all the treatment at the hospital and disposal of a very big horse was around £350 After all we had gone through it nice to know that there are some vets that dont make a huge profit at this time. What to do is the question. This is a dilema for me. All 3 off my ponies were taken' AWAY' by my parents, but Dexter is my first as a grown up.

And have always said he would be put to sleep by vet, however, many people have said it is quicker and more painless to do it by th gun, I do not know.

It cost me £70 for mine to be pts, the big cost was the collection and cremation, think that was in the region of £600.

I have witnessed (under a vet) euthanasia of horses by injection and by gun, and I would easily opt for the shooting option if I had a choice, it is so quick the horse doesn't even stop to wonder what's going on, yet alone get stressed.

Our horse vet use the gun by preference, much better for the horse IMO, but very dramatic for the owner - but it is about the animal to me.

In terms of disposal, will hunt kennels still take them?

With Sid the euthansia and disposal costs were somewhere in the region of about £450 though the RVC I didn't have a choice on the method used. I didn't want his ashes so it was a communal cemation thus cheaper. I thought that this was quite reasonable in the grand scheme of things

My mare was pts by injection in Dec 2006. She was individually cremated and I went to collect her ashes. It cost £500. I think the minimum was £420 and then it went up according to bodyweight, my mare was a 15.2hh small show hunter type.

Our last one was pts by local equine crematorium (knackerwoman) last Easter as an emergency, cost for pts and removal was £200, we didn't want ashes back.
Better for horse IMO and for us, as no waiting around for removal (would be very inconvenient as dogs also use yard, can you imagine?

I would always choose to call the kennels and get them to deal with it.

i took to kennels, £80 iirc. done very calmly, kindly and professionally, and absolutely instant.

Mine was shot and then went to London Zoo! Cost about £250 in all.
