I'm looking to get my first horse within the next year or so and am considering a companion pony. I was wondering how much that costs. livery is £80 PCM.
we have a rescue welsh mountain pony as a companion. she's pretty cheap to keep but we do have our own land so dont pay livery. she doesnt eat a lot, is really tidy in the stable so we dont waste a lot of bedding and is unshod. In terms of worming, vaccinations, teeth etc she costs the same as the ridden ponies. she's getting on in years so we do feed a joint supplement and at some stage I do expect she'll need some kind of medication. she is worth her weight in gold as a companion so whatever she costs we are prepared to pay it.
My companion costs the same as my ridden pony, minus competition entry fees/cost of lessons.
You still need to pay livery/vet (some yards its mandatory to have horses vaccinated)/feed/hay/farrier - even if just a trim/dentist etc.
Minimally -
£80 livery a month.
£15-£30 a trim every 6-12 weeks (depending on your pony's needs).
Hay - £50 per month in Winter. (I go through 2 round bales a month in winter for 2 natives living out @ £25 per bale). In summer, they don't have any hay.
Vaccination - £80 (Say £6 per month).
Dentist - £50 annually (say £5 per month)
She doesn't need hard feed or rugs.
£145 per month approximately IF living out. Prices will vary depending on location but that's roughly what I pay for my companion.
My two yearlings are on an assited scheme where I get help with some basic costs, worming, regular injections etc through the welfare organisation they belong to. I have my own field and because they are native ponies they can live out, and only need hay when there is no grass, so cost very little to keep and feed.
Biggest costs for me are blacksmith for trims every 6-7 weeks and cost of third party liability insurance.
