I need to know what fee's involve loaning a horse. Is it just like owning your own a horse, you pay for all the fee's(e.g vet and farrier) or does the owner of the horse pay some fee's?
I really need to know as I think I can persuade my parents into loaning instead of owning.
Thanks!

Depends on the individaul arrangement - have a look at the BHS site for the template loan contract.

Normally whoever loans the horse pays all bills (including insurance and vet bills up to excess limit). The owner may also stipulate where the horse is to be kept so you may end up with little control over livery bills.

You pay the livery, feed, shoeing, worming, dentist, vaccinations- basically all the bills except the insurance which the owner normally keeps on. If something was to happen to the horse and it needed vetinary treatment then it is normal for you to pay the excess and then the owner to carry on the claim through insurance.

it is different for each agrement when i had jay on part loan i paid half of everything straight down the middle but then other people pay so much a week it depends on if you have full/part loan and on the owner in question the only way you can find out for sure is to find someone who wants a loan sharer then ask them how much it would cost nothing is set in stone.

You pay EVERYTHING. Its exactly like owning your own horse but not having to buy it. You could always go for a part loan where you and the owner split the costs and time with the horse as this would be much cheaper and less time consuming.

If you keep at grass livery then that saves rather than stabled (7-14PW). Not all ponies need shoes, mine don't, and might have fronts if needed (£30 ish every 5-7 weeks) , .If loaning a native which are good doers, so feed (£5-10PW) In winter will need Hay or haylage ( £10-20PW) You will need a dentice once or twice a year and the vet for vaccinations (£100 PA approx) Then the tack and bits and pieces you might need through the year (£500 PA)
You could share a pony with someone to help with cost..
If you want to go to shows thats more on top.
Can you not help out at the local riding school and have the fun of helping, your parents will see you are dedicated and may get a pony for you Loan/buy..
Hope this helps...
Thought you had your own Trinity 13.2hh palamino and a Laddie a 15.2hh super show jumper...

If you mean Leasing the horse some charge £200 PM for a novice event horse!

Golly thats a lot of money but i suppose thats because its in surrey near london, I'm near salisbury and its sooo much cheaper, DIY here with stable/Olimpic size all weather areana
is from £18 to £25 tops.
Welshhorsegirl is from Wales so I imagine it would be the same as here.

My grass livery is £25 a wk and where i'm moving to soon it'll be £30 a wk for grass and stable but that's it.No manege, bedding, feed etc inc in that.Living near to london is very expensive, but the lovely countryside here (Bucks/Oxon Area) outways the costs IMO,course it does help i have a permit for 2 massive estates that some people could only dream of riding on!

I am offering my horse up for loan or share. The loanee will pay for everything but there would be some lee-way for the right loanee.
Its basically the same as owning a horse without the 2/3/4 grand outlay x

Trinity and Laddie belong to the rising centre I go to. I help out there every weekend, but pay £17 for either a hack or lesson(half day), or £30 to go help out all day and have both. It's just that I've been doing that for 5years now and want to be around horses more. I know I'm lucky to be going at all, but owning my own would be my dream come true. I guess another 3-4years of half days then I can get a weekend job at the riding centre which would be ace. I think I can wait until then!

when i had a horse on full loan it was on the owners private yard(no one else there just her horses)

i paid £20 in summer and £25 in winter, though owner obviosuly wasnt paying livery fees

i didnt pay for vet
though i did have insurance just incase owner turned round and said I had to pay!

didnt pay shoes until last few months of loaning her where i payed half of them

didnt pay for feed or anything else but i suppose this was covered in my cost as no livery fees

see now that would be something my parents would agree to straight away! I suppose it depends on the owner mostly, as people have many different opinions on this!

thanks for your help xx

One thing to think of, is that apart from the 'keep' costs (ie feed, livery etc), you'll still have to buy alot of things you'd have to buy if you bought your own horse or pony.
For example, I loaned a pony last year and had to buy grooming kit, rugs, some tack, haynets, mucking out equipment, etc etc, Plus the ongoing costs of wormers, fly sprays, and various lotions and potions.

Can you ask your RS if they will loan you a pony? What i mean is, that you look after the pony each day, you take 'responsibility', but they still use it at the RS. That way, it will work out much much cheaper, and you'll know the pony, and have people around if you need help. The pony will be worked daily, and the RS will still be getting their money from you.

Good god! I pay £5 a week grass livery and £10 a week for a stable and grazing with jumping paddock, forest hacking etc etc.

£10pw grass livery is the norm around here (south wales) and DIY livery about £20-25pw.

When i loaned my last horse i paid for everything, as if he was my own, the only diffrence was that u hadnt paid for him.

it worked out roughly at about £100per month if you wanted to scale it down, altho most things like shoeing and worming are around every 2 months.
