Can someone please give me an idea how much MRI scans cost - my insurance will only cover 50% of the cost at best...

The horse has navicular and possibly DDFT damage. Can both feet be done with one scan?
Or is one scan per foot?
Or does it take several scans per foot (x rays were taken from the side and from the bottom of the foot)?

thanks a lot.

I just had a quote for bilateral MRI from Newbury and it was in the region of £1k. However, my vet advised me to benchmark around £1500 in case they had to do additional xrays etc. (They Xray to make sure there is no metal in the hoof from the clenches). From what my vet told me, I understand the horse is sedated and the scan uses a sort of welly boot so both legs are done separately.
I was in the same position as you wrt to insurance so I shopped around a bit (Liphook was more expensive!).
Luckily my girl has just come sound so we've postponed the MRI and started to bring her back into work instead. Good luck with yours

I had one done last year and I think it cost about £800 - £1k at O'Gormans. They did both feet/legs. He had to stay in overnight but i think that was because they ran out of time the day he was in due to an emergency. Quick tip though - get your farrier to take shoes off before he goes. I didn't have time to co-ordinate with my farrier and so O'Gormans did it (and took off half his hoof as well) - took almost as long for hooves to recover as he did from his injury (suspensory)!

My boy went up to Liphook last year for an MRI scan, after x-rays at local vets showed a chipped pedal bone. The MRI part cost me £1,419.32 (inc VAT), this included removal of shoes, clean foot prep, x-ray (to make sure no metal was left in), the MRI scan, MRI Report and sedation. I was very lucky that my insurance company paid out the full 100%
