My mare was left at the vet hospital for another MRI scan earlier this year and I picked her up the next day. She had her shoes done while she was there by THEIR farrier. Just two fronts and a back trim.
Fancy shoes with no clips when she previously had back shoes on the front so not much different really. I had taken the back shoes off last time she was shod so only two fronts to do.
I took her home and she lost one in less than a week. I was furious as she was due to go to stud the next day and only had one shoe on. Of course it was the shoe on the foot that needed it. I tried to get my farrier to come and put it on but he had been on our yard that morning and was miles away by then.
So she went to stud with one shoe and the stud owner arranged for his farrier to put it back on for me and I left some money.

I received the bill from the vet hospital which was fine as the insurance was paying BUT the shoes were done at a cost of £90 OMG, £90 for TWO shoes and a trim. I returned the insurance form with a note complaining about the shoe coming off within a week and having no contact details to call him to put it back on and the fact that they cost £90. The responded and told me they would investigate.

I received a letter today from vet hospital saying insurance have paid and for me to pay the remaining £30 which is what MY farrier usually charges for two fronts. Have to say I was annoyed. The farrier didn't do a good job, I was given no contact details for him and they want me to pay when I had to pay someone else to put the damm thing back on again.

Am I just being a moaner do you think or would you be a little annoyed too?

Ive paid £100 before for remedial shows on back end and £85 for another type of remedial shoes. However they last 4 weeks on her. If they didnt i would complain, however 30 isnt too much money think of it that way. Maybe pay however send a letter saying your unhappy about the shoes again to them?

I don't mind paying the £30 but if I had to pay the full £90 I wouldn't be happy at all. However he has been paid a big wack for putting two shoes on my mare and they didn't stay on more than 5 days. I then had to pay out more money for a different farrier to put it back on and then it stayed on for the rest of the 6 weeks. She hasn't lost a shoe in over 5 years.
So he didn't do his job properly and still got paid silly money for putting them on. That is what has annoyed me. :(

She had shoes on when I left her and they were due to be done and as the remedial farrier was due the next day the vet advised that they would put them back on the next day as they would be taken off for the MRI scan. No problem I said. I wasn't told they would cost £90 but that doesn't matter as insurance paid anyway BUT he has still been paid even though he did a **** job.
If I paid out £90 for two front shoes i'd expect them to stay on longer than a week. If I lost a shoe within a week with my usual farrier he would come and put it back on for me with no charge, yet I had to pay someone to put the shoe back on and he's got £90 in his back pocket for a poor job.
I think I will be sending another letter of complaint. I am such a moaner. lol

your horse has probably not lost a shoe in 5 years due to being shod short or robbed at the heels. (possibly leading to the probem that needed an mri for) remedial farrier has put on shoes to help with the problem which are probably longer at the heel or with a lateral extension. so liable to be pulled off if you didnt put over reach boots on. £90 for a pair of remedial fronts is about the going rate. as you have obviously done your 5 year apprenticeship and have qualified why dont you shoe it yourself? i would talk to your vet, but i dont think you have been overcharged. hope the mare is sound soon.

Vet was happy with the shoes that were on thank you very much. No need to be funny. I'm obviously NOT a farrier but if I pay for shoes I want them to stay on. No advise given re over reach boots nor was I given any contact details for the farrier for him to come and put the shoe back on. The shoe was put back on and DIDN'T come off again. farrier commented that they didn't have enough nails in.

Also the problem was not shoe related it was due to an over reach injury. I am very happy and confident that my farrier knows what he is doing and that he doesn't rip me off.
I'm not saying I was over charged, i'm saying I paid alot of money for shoes that didn't stay on!!

Oh and said horse is now barefoot and sound thank you so i don't have to shoe it myself.
