This is probably a "how long is a piece of string" question, but I'll ask it anyway! How much (approx.) would it cost to run a 3.5 tonne box?

I'd love to eventually get one so I can get a bit further afield with the boys, would have to be an old one!!

:)

When we had ours, it was around £900 to £1000 a year :). It was an old one though so it was always needing bit and pieces maintained :).

Mine is old (1994). It costs me just over £200 a year insurance, £80 a year breakdown, road tax was about £115 for 6 months (I think)
I have had some work done on it this year amounting to about £300 but I had the money & want to keep it running it's best & safe for my horse.
Fuel wise I take mine out every weekend sometimes both days usually journeys of an hour or so & only use about £100 diesel a month.

Does depend on the vehicle, age, engine, I have a 20 year old 5t box, it costs around £200 a year for insurance, £90 for it's MOT (£75 for retest) as it's too big for normal MOT, plus any work that needs doing, which was none for last MOT, the fuel use is around 28mpg

Things to consider - can your mechanic fit it in their workshop (mine can't), do you have somewhere to keep it, I need to pay storage on mine

Oh, and all your friends will want their furniture moved

Hmmm interesting!

Theres room at the yard so thats good. Are they easy to pick up at a reasonable price? How much should I be looking at spending?

I reckon mine costs roughly the same as running a car.

Most of the costs are the same regardless of mileage and most horseboxes aren't used enough for wear and tear to tyres and brakes to become a major issue as a running cost.

Tax £200, Insurance about £300 (05 reg), only needs an MOT not a plate £60?? Pretty good on diesel, is used every weekend in winter (relatively short trips) and I only seem to put fuel in it every couple of months). I get it serviced once a year on advice of mechanic, he doesn't think it does the miles to justify more frequent servicing. So £250?

It has just cost £600 to get through MOT, but I knew a lot of work was going to need doing on the brakes.

Oh Dilbert you have become my new bestest friend. Lemon cake on tap m'dear haha.
I asked C that very question earlier this year. She came up with £800 a year.... :O An awful lot of money if you don't use it regularly.
Is there a charge to park it at the yard?

Mine is an OAP on an H reg but only 60000 with FSH

It cost me £2000 and had just had a new floor put in. It costs £130 pa insurance 12 month tax was £230, recovery £80, annual service £160- just had ramp re boarded and rubbered and that was £340 and I put £60 of diesel a month in for weekly lesson and usually about 4 other outings and occasionally if i buy something big on ebay ;)

It's old and a bit crusty but is big and airy for my 16.2hh warmblood and lets us have some freedom. The best bit is packing the ponies, girls and all the crap that comes with them all and setting up camp at summer shows I love it!
