So I've just seen the criteria to qualify. 3 x training events and 4 x sheets. Plus entry fees at the event if you're selected, accom, stabling, bedding, etc etc. How much roughly could you be looking at in total? I'm assuming well over £500 ? 😵

I would imagine so. I thought about trying to have a go this time but tbh even finding training to go to is difficult! I'm not sure there would even be 3 within a reasonable distance from me. I quickly decided it was too much effort!

I've been twice - it's definitely not the cheapest thing to do but it is good fun, and means I now have people I know and can chat to when I'm at normal BD comps on my own! Usually you'd have 4 sheets anyway if you're going for Areas or Regionals, it's the training that I found hardest to squeeze in as there aren't many BD trainers within an hour of me. I used to do a camp (which counts as two sessions) and one flexi session to get mine done.

I think they assume you'd already be competing, so have test sheets, and I found the training part easy as you can include BD test riding clinics and also some online BD sessions.

So I wouldn't include that competing and training in the cost.

You do have to pay entries for the Inter Regionals themselves and you do have to stable on site too so add that cost.

It seems like an awful lot to ask. I guess once you 'qualify' you then have to pay your own entry fees and costs for the event ?
I’m not sure what the problem is or what you’re expecting of inter regionals? They’re a BD comp like any other, you’re just representing your region. When I did it (2018-19) the region managed to get sponsorship to pay for a team trainer, which was fab for the warm ups, but otherwise it was all self funded.

I’m not sure where else the money would come from!

Sounds pretty standard.

My stay away shows (PSG+) usually cost me the best part of £500 for 1 night & 2 tests. Hotel room (often cheaper and infinitely more comfy than hook up!), fuel, food, stable, extra bedding, obligatory picture… 😬

That's dedication!

Sounds about right, but when I was part of the team it was great fun and I would recommend! I normally compete totally solo (not that I've done much for a few years!), so to have that team around you and all be in it together was great! At the time I didn't find it much more that my normal competing costs as I was out anyway collecting sheets and my trainer is a BD accredited, so the actual Inter Regionals cost was only really what I'd be spending on a championship anyway.

I really enjoyed it and was glad I was pushed to do it :).

I think it’s the money you have to spend to apply for teams.

I did teams way way back and you only needed recent test results to apply - but that was in the early days when they were desperate for riders to apply.

Was that your recent Addington cost? I know someone who has qualified for the Trailblazers combined training later this year and she was wondering broadly what the costs would be.

No somerford high profile, myerscough was similar.

With Addington the schedule was released ahead of time (they know the class numbers so can do this), with my classes being both after lunch and a sub 2 hour lorry trip I didn’t need to stay over.

I did however spend a fortune on two reels and I bought a photo. I’m glad I did now considering our results!

I did the dressage trailblazers but many many years ago (pushing 15 years ago!) so can’t comment on costs of that.

Thanks - entry fees are one thing but staying over costs might make it too pricey.

Reels must be great to look back at!

Yes. Somerford stables aren’t cheap but I needed to be quick as the premier league runs over the weekend and they get booked out quickly. They do give you 2 bales of bedding as well (which I will pack up and take home with me!). Not all venues do and so the stable looks cheap but you’re buying 2 bales on top etc.

Reels are fab, I’ve only had a couple so far and love them. They’re a rarity at dressage but are becoming more common place at bigger shows. I will always buy one!

I stayed overnight at Addington for the champs last week. There was a choice of temporary (£38 and might have bedding in / can leave clean bedding behind, pretty small but looked solid enough for temps - most of the pros were in there I think) or permanent (£58, empty, have to be left clean and empty, full rubber matting, lovely big stables - I went for these as I'm a softy (and I look after my loan horse better than my own 😝)) stables. Bales of shavings were £9 each but you could take your own if space in your lorry and horsehage bales were £9 (I usually take my own but the yard has stopped doing haylage for the summer...horse needs hay to be soaked so I ended up buying a horsehage!).

Entry fees were steep but that's because it was the BD champs, I've no idea what Trailblazers will be like unfortunately!

At the RoR champs someone I know slept in her car and plenty of people sleep in tents if don’t have living in lorry to keep costs down but stabling away is in general expensive particularly if you like a full bed of shavings. I worked out that at one championship show the likely cost of shavings was around £9k for the number of stables hired out. If you can afford it go for it.

I didn't factor cost of hook up into the Addington costs above as I didn't use it (solar panel + leisure battery = no need for one or two nights) but it was over £100 if you did need it! The cost was the same whether you were there for one night or the week 😳

It used to be the same format at hartpury also. I have done hook up / air beds in the lorry there for a night previously and it wasn’t horrendous, it was quite fun with a friend and my sister! These days I go on my own and it makes it a much more pleasant experience to have a proper bed and shower. It’s a perk I look forward post slog of setting up a stable by myself and driving!

I know, but as soon as you're staying away the costs rocket up. I think it's just the reality that you have to accept if you want to do these things. Of course not everyone will be able to afford it, which I get sucks, but that is what it costs ☹️
Pretty much! I’d love to do a CDI eventually but I’d never be able to afford one abroad. That really is eye watering!

By hook up do you mean a camping type connection to electric? You normally pay £5 for these when you go camping!
Yes - exactly that! Some venues need to hire in generators hence the cost, others do it knowing people will pay ;)

wow, thats definitely a rip off then. Even running a generator 24/7 its only going to cost them a fiver or so split between the people using it. I'm genuinely shocked.

Yes OH has remarked on the cost as opposed to his caravan holiday days. We get by on leisure batteries but don’t use a microwave, TV or hair dryer or hair straighteners. OH installed a diesel warm air heater in the lorry when they came down to around a £100 and we’d qualified for a November championship - have seen a YouTuber who attaches a long hose to the warm air outlet and uses that as a hair dryer. Haven’t tried that though.

I've seen the diesel heater hair dryer and thought it was genius! Diesel heaters are absolutely the best and cheapest way to get heating in. They are down to about £60 now!

I suspect 99% of horse related things are a rip off
Agreed!

Having said that, the cost of maintaining and running a facility like Addington must be eye-watering. They won't make enough from entry fees alone so alternative revenue streams must be essential...even if it means apparently huge margins on small things like hook-ups and shavings.
