Hi all! Can anyone tell me the general cost of shavings?? I have been buying Hunter shavings having tried other cheaper ones that seem to either be reallly dusty or have lumps in them or just don't seem to go as far. Unfortunately there's no 24hr turnout so my horse is in at night and out during the day which means that I have to have bedding all year round. The cost of shavings seems to have gone up though I am paying between £6.95 and £7.25 for a bag of Hunters.

I don't have any storage facilities although could prob put about 20 bags in my garage at home if necessary. As usual cheaper prices seem to come if you buy in bulk, but without somewhere to put them and large transport (I have a mini) that's not very feasable!!

SO has anyone out there got any ideas where I can get shavings from for a good price that are good quality. I live West of London, Herts, Bucks border. ( I am sure if I lived out in the sticks or up North the situation would be different, any thoughts most appreciated!!)

I've just put mine on straw as shavings as stupid prices - although I can get hunters for £5.75 per bag I think using 3 bags per week at that price is stupid!!

I use 'Natural Flake', they're produced locally but I know they send them out all over the place. They're large shavings, very fluffy, & dust extracted & I pay £5.50 per bale. Once you've bounced the contents about on opening there's loads in there.

Ufortunately straw not allowed on the yard. He was on Aquamax which was great at first but he seemed to get really wet and I was using 2 bags a week which got expensive. I can get awaywith 1 bag shavings a week at the moment, haven't tried the easibed, is that the short chopped stuff?? Can't look it up on internet as sneakily trying to do this at work!! tee hee hee

Yeah it's like tiny wood chips, smells lovely and doesn't move! I put in about 6/7 bags to begin with and just skip out droppings during the week, then remove the wet underneath at the weekend, usually only 1 barrow worth. My friend hatges it because she thinks it's so heavy!!

How do you manage the bed? Ours are on shavings and we use a seni-deep litter system, which works really well as cuts down the amount of shavings we need to use per week - our big un's get through 1 bag a week, whilst the smaller (and it has to be said, cleaner!) ponies only use 1/2 a bale a week. x x x

We use Bedmax and pay £4.90 from our normal supplier or £5.90 for the odd one from local tack shop - much nicer than normal shavings imo

wow - all expensive!

Where i am it varys at £3.50 for standard shavings to £5.50 for good quality snowflake type.

I prefer good quality straw.

Easibed is easy if the horse is clean. Otherwise it gets heavy. Belvior bedding is ok. Smells werid thou!

i must be one of the lucky ones in the North then as i pay £3.20 +vat per bale. But i have to collect them for this and have to buy a minimum of 1 pallet (30bales), but i go straight to the manufacturer.
