How much is a realistic budget for a menage for home use? For a one horse owner and used mostly for schooling. If there is a JCB on site anyway, then the stones, drainage pipes, membrane and then the topping. It is the topping that is the most expensive part, I thought, after the ground works.

Is there a good guide to DIY?

Friends of mine put one in two years ago and did it all themselves and it cost them around £17,000, they did have silica and rubber on it and that did include the fencing.

These people do a kit which might work out cheaper and also they way the economy is at the moment you can probably haggle over the Silica so long as you can get a 40ft bulker into your premises.

We had ours done about 7 years ago for £18 000.

We had ours done by professionals (Charles Britton) as we are on clay and have a slight slope. We didnt think it was a slope but there is about a metre drop. We just didnt have the know how to do it ourselves.

The soil and drainage is really important. I have a friend who is on gravel and they just put a surface down and it has been fine. We couldnt do that.

When we investigated, we found that it was going to be about £2000 more have it built than doing it ourselves ( but we could have saved money by having a cheaper surface and fencing. )

I was advised (independently) to go for the best surface I could afford.

So I would say £20000 would get one built (they did all the planning permission for this too). You dont need the four rail fencing we had tbh. That added a bit of money. In hindsight i think we could have saved a bit there. Scrimp on the extras but not on the surface!
