Hey Everyone. I was hoping you can help me. I currently live in South Africa and am planning on moving to England in a few months (probably Portsmouth/Southampton area). I really want to continue with my riding (I'm currently a competitive show jumper, have owned horses before and assistant managered a livery yard). What I want to know is what the average costs are, in that area, for owning a horse. I'll probably be looking at full-livery, either part-stabled or 24/7 outdoor. Also,
what should I expect to pay for farrier; barefoot, half and full-set.
Average vet call out,
what shots my horses will have to have, how often and how much these will cost,
EDT costs,
physio and chiro costs
Feed average per bag and weight per bag
Hay per bale
Shavings
Average prices for half and full lease.

I know this is alot of info to ask for, I just want to have a budget set up so I know what to expect and what is considered normal and expensive.

Thank you for your time

in chichester (about 20mins down the road from pompy)

full-livery, £150 pw thats in 1/2 a day and the night with lovely facilites and beautiful off road hacking

what should I expect to pay for farrier;
barefoot- about £20
half- about £40
full-set - £75
Average vet call out - my vets charge £40 call out £30 exmination fee then drugs etc on top
what shots my horses will have to have, how often and how much these will cost - flu every year and tetnus every other year costing between £30-£40 a jab (they do a combi jab for flu and tet)
EDT costs- £30
physio and chiro costs - £50
Feed average per bag and weight per bag- i feed hifi @ £10 for a 20kg bag and nuts at £5.10 for a 20kg bag
Hay per bale- hay is £4.50 a bale and haylage is about £6.50
Shavings- £7.50 (comfy bed which is like easibed £6.99)
Average prices for half and full lease- full lease is just the cost of the horse to keep and half lease is about £30 a week

also you need to factor in insurance which i pay £45 a month for LOU, LOA vets fees 3rd party etc

hi

I can't say what livery costs are as mine are at home but have listed my costs below in the hope it is of help. Obviously will depend on where you are in the country - I'm south Lincs which is fairly low in price generally.

Hay - £3.00 per bale ex field (£5.50 for hayage) both small bales
Vet - £45.00 call out
Vaccs - Tetanus and Flu - £30.00 each
Farrier - Trim - £20.00; Full set of shoes & trim - £70.00
Shavings - £6.50

Oooh how long is a piece of string! livery costs can vary enormously depending on where you are anything from £25.00 p/w for just a stable ( no bedding or feed) and grazing upto £120.00 p/w full livery without excercise.

Farrier £65.00 approx every 6 weeks
Hay £2.50 - £4.50 p bale
Haylage £7.50 p bale
hard feed £8.00 p bag average for nuts or chaff usually 20kg bags
Shavings £5.50 - £7.50 p bale
Horse Insurance £450.00 per year. approx
Flu and tet jabs once a year £60.00 including call out
EDT £45.00 approx once or twice a year

This is just an estimate but if you budget for about £3500 per year it should cover most of your cost, not including competing or lessons etc.

Hope this hepls
