Hi there

I have a 17hh 5 year old KWPN Gelding and costs for keeping him are as follows:

Initial start-up costs:
Cost - around £6000
Pre-purchase vet check: £250 for a 5 stage vetting (needed by many insurance companies)
Saddle - £300 for synthetic (which I have because he is a growing lad and changing shape) and around £700+ for a leather
Bridle - start at about £30 for a cheap or up to £200+ for a super dooper. Aim for £100 for a decent long lasting one. Bit - £10-£40
Girth stirrups etc - £30 upwards
Other stuff (halter, leadrope, brushes etc etc) - say £50 for the lot
Winter cover - rugs start as cheap at £30 but aim for about £100 for a decent outdoor winter rug and slightly less for good heavyweight stable rug

Ongoing costs:
Hay - I pay £4 per bale and go through 5 per week at least
Other feeds - about £15 a week for short feed and alfa
Nutritional supplements - this is totally down to the individual!
Wormer - £12ish
Farrier - £55
Farrier - N/A
Dentist - £30
Veterinarian - varies!
Tack cleaning products - £15?
Tack replacement/repair - varies
Boarding Probly DIY / Part DIY - say £30 a week
Annual saddle check on horse - £30
First aid supplies - varies
Lessons - I pay £30 but can be cheaper
Float hire - £100!!!
Float purchase - varies!
Entry fees per show - from £5 upwards depending on whether jumping or xc or dressage etc

Hope this is of some help.

With the clothes tehre is something for every budget for example - you can get plastic boots from about £20 and go up to leather boots for more like £600 so it is up to you!

Would be interesting know what you pay at the moment!

Can I add another element to this question, please - what does everyone pay for livery? I know this has probably been done to death but I am interested to know - mine's is £120 per month for DIY inc stable. Not great facilities but has floodlit sand school. In south east area.
Thanks

I pay 220 per month for part includes all bedding and haylage and they turn out bring in - nice outdoor floodlit arena loads of jumps - beautiful stables - I think I get a good deal as I know my horse is happy there :-)
