I can buy good quality big bale haylage for £22 a bale and I don't think a horse out during the day and in at night would eat more than 1 bale per month - do you? The reason I ask is my YO has charged me £50 per month for last 3 months, seems much too high - what do you think? Thanks

my friend has 3 horses at DIY livery in Derbyshire. she pays £4 per bale of small hay. each horse eats a minimum of 2 bales a week. thats about £35 a month per horse minimum. the big bale haylage is about £30 a bale.
 
That does seem very expensive, pesonally If i were being charged that I would be buying in my own! Be careful one big bale of haylage doesnt go off for just one horse, could you share with anyone?
 
forgot to mention.... YO can only provide hay and it's a bit dusty so I bought big bale haylage for October with 4 of us sharing and we've gone through 2 bales = £11 each which is why I think £50 is extremely high. I was charged £50 July, Aug and Sept. Even if we used 4 bales it would only be £22 each but now YO says she doesn't want us buying our own in because now everyone wants to do it?
 
whats your livery yard called? and where abouts is it?
this happened to my friend at her old yard.. and were in derbyshire!!

Well that just proved that her prices are way overpriced, do you have a livery agreement to say you have to buy hay from her? If not, could you approach her with a few other liveries and say you think her is hay is not good quality and overpriced and only if she sorts it out you will carry on buying from her?
Surely she is going to start loosing liveries if she tries to force people to buy bad quality hay from her.

She's always losing liveries but doesn't seem to care. Quite often she tells people to leave so I have to tread carefully because at the moment I haven't another option!! My livery agreement says haylage is included but she says that no longer applies!!!

My YO charges us DIY liveries £3 per horse per week for haylage. I give my 18hh 1½ Dengie hi fi bags of haylage (stuffed tight) each night plus 1 bag in the am. My recent bill for this amounted to £22 for 3 weeks . But some months if we use more round bales my haylage bill has been between £55-£70 a month. If I had to buy in small bale haylage, e.g. Topscore, I'd need to feed him 3 bales a week at cost of £6.35 each which would amount to £76 a month.

It depends on the individual amount you use and the quality of the bale. If the quality of the haylage is good, I reduce his hard feed. A good baseline is to compare your haylage costs over past 6 month period and work out what it would've cost you to buy in yourself.
