HI THERE
i no your all very busy people, but i was wondering if any one could help?
at present i have a very ideal agreement with a sharer, i look after and ride a irish draught 3/4 times a week. pay 130 towards her a month. very ideal.
i have built up a very good relationship with owner and horse over the last 8/9 months and owner is going to uni this yr. they wont sell the horse but will look to full loan.
i am the obvious choice as i share her now but its all about money
i have no idea how much she would cost a month.
dont worry i will be asking the owner all these q's but would like too see what others pay.
and if any one could compose a list of things that i many not think of not having to worry about everything on a day to day baisis and put an average price of the monthly out goings i would very much appreciate it,
i think im doing the right thing by researching this as much as i can just need a little help.
i know that tack and rugs would be incl in the loan as i already ride and turn out and in with them.

many thanks to any one with advice

Hiya,

A lot of the cost will depend on what price the yard charges for livery, and what type of livery he is on - is his feed / bedding included in the monthly / weekly charge, does he get brought in and turned out for you etc etc. I would guess at anywhere from £200 per month for feed, stables, bedding etc. If you pay £130, I would imagine you will be paying half the livery charges so it may be £260 per month

However, on top of this there is:
Worming. Cost depends on your program, mine was £75 per year at my old yard, not sure of my new costs.
Insurance. Depends on the value of your horse but I would guess around £30-£40 per month
Shoeing. Most horses go 8 weeks between sets. A set costs me £55
Lessons. If you chose to have them
Transport / show entry fees. If you want to take her out.
Injections - annual vaccinations. Cannot remember the cost but I am thinking around £80
Teeth - getting her teeth rasped 1 or 2 times a year. I paid £70 ish to have it done but I think you can get it cheaper if you use a dentist that does not use sedation

Plus all the other unexpected items like getting a saddle fitter out, or a back checker, small vet items that would not be covered by insurance, replacing ripped rugs, topping up grooming kit items......!!!

Have you thought about getting another sharer to split the costs between two of you?

Also depends on where in the country you are, I am in the south and by comparison to ncarter, my costs are as follows:

Livery £130 per week for part livery (includes all feed, bedding, hay, turn out, rug changes, muck out 7 days a week)
Shoeing £75 a set every 6 weeks
Wormers £75 per year
Teeth £35 every 6-8 months
Insurance £35 per month (public liability, vets fees, personal cover)
Annual vaccinations £40 for actual injections, up to £50 for a call out if not shared with any other liveries.

Last time I sat down and worked it out with all the regular costs i could think of, I made it on average £55 per week, based on a fairly cheap diy yard with 16 hours turnout per day.

Wow - wish I could get away with £55 per week. We are on a DIY yard but there is a groom who will do anything from turnout to full livery and is quite reasonable with her charges. Last time I tallied up stable rent/grooms fees/bedding/hay insurance/shoeing etc It was nearer £90 per week. It is quite a bit less in summer as on more or less full turnout so hay/bedding bill reduces dramatically. But you still have to budget for emergencies - if horse injured and on box rest for example so more bedding/hay needed as not turned out. I must admit that it seems to cost more now as owners than when we had a full loan but we probably buy more bits and pieces that are not strictly necessities. Things like cost of rug cleaning /fly repellent etc can add up too.
Good luck with the loan - sounds like you will have a fab summer. :):):)
