At the yard we have a pony who has just returned from several months at another yard/RS. Care was not great (shoes and feet not done since Xmas for example) and owner clueless. Pony has been on isolation paddock since return but in the last couple of days has started coughing for long periods - big chesty coughs not throat clearing if that makes sense - and also has a snotty nose (haven't seen the snotty nose myself so don't know if there is any colour to it). Any ideas as owner doesn't seem concerned and is happy to wait until Monday when vet is out to another horse - but as we have had strangles here before thanks to a horse returning from stud YO and the rest of us are a little more twitchy about possible infection - not least for the much loved oldies that here.

Any ideas what this may be - good bad or indifferent would be much appreciated.

FWIW I would have vet asap.

Should also say pony is out 24/7 no feed or hay and is still in isolation.

At least he is in isolation.

You say he has not been to well looked after so my first thought would be a round worm infestation, they do migrate through the throat to lungs and do cause a snotty nose and a cough. Bomb drench with a broad spectrum wormer, weekly for three weeks.

If there is a swelling in between the jaw bones then I would be inclined to think it's strangles. In which case definately vet ASAP.
