Coughing, anything to worry about?

My horse has started coughing, I don't think it's anything serious but I thought I would post to check!

Its often starting work, although can be any time. It's not every day, max of once a week, so infrequent. It's been going on for a few weeks, sounds quite dry, and normally after a few coughs in a row will then be fine for a while. I'm thinking its just the dust from the stable? She's on hay ( which now gets soaked but wasn't until the coughing) and straw. Out at night, in during the day.

Occasionally a bit of a nasel discharge, a cream colour, but never anything much and has only happened a couple of times.

All opinions appreciated.

My horse had this and vet said it was normal for a horse to cough a few times at the start of exercise.

I keep my horse on cardboard and haylage and he hasnt coughed since. Turned out it was the dry hay causing it.

I would change the bedding and see how he/she gets on. I hope it settles down soon. I also recommend respirease from NAF, my horse has this intermittently when chesty.

Thanks for that! I really do think it's the bedding, it gets very dusty in our stables.

I'll try out a different bedding, and continue to soak her hay!

Thankyou for the recommendation, I'll have a look for that when I nip to the saddlery this weekend!:)

Thankyou very much for putting my mind at rest

Your'e welcome. I hope this does the trick. Fingers crossed for you.

My horse cant have any bedding other than cardboard, even cheap shavings start him off.

If he doesnt get any better after 10 days, call the vet, but I hope it wont come to that.

From my own experience I would guess at the hay. I had a pony I kept on straw and he coughed at the start of exercise even when I soaked the hay. I found giving him haylage stopped the coughing completely.

vet said my pony may be coughing due to a pollen allergy /hayfever type thing as he hasn't been so bad since the sun disappeared a couple of weeks ago!!
