I have just bought some new chicks and they have cough :(

Breeder has offered a refund but I can't get them back to her until Monday. Any tips on keeping them alive and helping them through. Cough sounds rattly but no mucous to be seen. All 3 are coughing. I have kept them away from mine but is there anything I can give them like a tonic to help them. I read chickens can suffer colds just like us and maybe they will pull through...?

Sorry, chicks are terrible for dropping dead on you. How old are they? Where are you keeping them? If they aren't already, get them on medicated chick crum. My survival rates improved drastically when I switched from unmedicated to medicated. There's very little you can do really. You could take them to the vet for some systemic a/b, but there won't be much more they can do either and I'd guess you wouldn't want the expense anyway.

I usually keep some Baytril handy for sick poultry, if you rang your vet they might be able to give you some. Other than that it's just a case of keeping them as stress free as possible so that they are warm but not too hot, plenty of fresh water and feed and well ventilated but not draughty.

You can also try a clove of garlic in their drinking water and grapefruit seed extract is supposed to be very good at fighting infections and I have used it in the past. There are over the counter tonics you can buy, but I've never used them so can't say if they'd help.

Thank you. I have given them some crushed garlic in Olive oil one of my best remedies for everything :) I haven't any medicated crumb and where could I get that from? And I will phone the vets but suspect they won't be open until Monday :(

I knew I should have hatched my own....... :( Poor little mites they look all dishevelled and sad.

You can buy medicated chick crum from any big poultry food supplier/feed shop/pet shop. It contains antibiotics. Good luck with them, if you need any advice feel free to PM me x
