My pony who I've had for over a year has recently had a cough. No other symptoms of anything else just a dry cough that doesn't sound flemmy.
She hasn't ever had anything similar, she lives out and doesn't get hay or feed as is on good grass (originally thought it may be dust related so thought this might be relevant). Saying this, she has recently had some hay when coming into the stable that I thought maybe a bit dry and have got rid anyway.
A horse in the paddock next door had also recently had puffy and watery eyes and also had a similar cough but a lot less often than my pony.
I gave the vet a call to chat and as she hasn't changed in herself or her eating at all they said it sounds like a bit of pollen allergy as the grass pollen count is so high at the moment. He has told me to try some local honey etc and to keep an eye out for if it gets any worse and to call him out if so.
This was yesterday and so I've just today started feeding her the local honey (more expensive than I thought!) and also put Vaseline on her nose to prevent pollen going up into her airways. Is there anything else I can do? Is there a supplement that can help?
She doesn't currently have a fly mask with a nose net but can get one if it will help. We're forecasted such hot and dry weather and I presume this will make things worse too.
