I have had my pony for 6 years and he has developed a cough, its nothing new because he has been coughing for a while, but he didn't have it when we first got him. He only coughs at the start of rides, like when we start trotting/ warming up, mostly a few coughs (ranging from a couple to up to 10 approx, but never a coughing fit or anything). He also sometimes coughs in his stable or when he has just been turned out and also coughs up some phlegm in his stable sometimes, but less than when he is riding. It doesn't affect his performance which is why we haven't really done anything about it, because he carries on as normal after he has coughed a bit at the start of the ride. He used to be fed on on dry hay with a bit of haylage, but now he has half hay soaked for 20 mins and half haylage. This has improved his coughing in the stable and he hasn't coughed up phlegm since, but he still coughs while riding. He also has the D&H breathe free supplement. He is turned out in the day, in at night on straw. It might just be that he is clearing his lungs, but I am worried there is an underlying problem ie RAO/ dust allergies that might get worse so I'm interested in what other people think of it before it possible gets worse.
