My pony is competing in showing classes at NPS champs, while in his first class he had a really bad coughing spasm, he was taken out of the class and back to the stable he only coughed one so we though he had maybe had a bit of hay stuck or inhaled something, we put him in the next class and after a while he was coughing again, he has two more classes tomorrow, any ideas what we could give him, by the way he is quite well in his self. TIA

Soak any feed you give him.

I use science supplement respriaid and lincoln cough syrup on mine that coughs in summer, I syringe the cough medicine might help if you can get hold of some and start giving it to him straight away and just before you ride

Are you away at a show?

If you struggling to get anything I would drive and get some human cough medicine and just syringe it a few times in the morning and before you go in.

Because you are away sometimes other people's hay and bedding can irritate some horses, I would really soak any hay your feeding beforehand as well.

Hope you get on OK let me know how you get on x

NPS champs is at Three counties isn't it? Have you travelled from out of the area to get here? I only ask as I help deliver the national pollen forecast as part of my job - this area of Malvern/Worcestershire is one of the worst in the country for high pollen and fungal spore counts (think of the area as like a bowl that it all collects in) so wonder if this could have triggered the cough in your pony if not present before? We moved from Yorkshire 5 years ago and mine now gets a cough during high count spells, something he never had before the move. I have found NAF respirator boost is really good at helping his cough. Also agree with only feeding wet hay to reduce any further dust/spores etc irritating the airways further.
