Yesterday morning someone noticed my horse coughing and then saw he had a snotty nose as well. The snot is a kind of orangey brown colour and his cough sounds quite 'wet' and gurgly. When i went to do him this morning, he greeted me as per usual but his whinny sounded very 'flemmy' and then he started coughing. He also had a yellowish discharge from his eyes (one eye worse than other). He seems fine in himself, isn't overly hot and had eaten all last nights haylage. His glands seem to be normal size as well. I have left him in today (YO asked me to and she thinks it is a cold) with a large haynet and i left him happily eating his breakfast.
He has been vaccinated for flu.

Has anyone experienced horses with similar cold/flu like symptoms? Is there anything i can do before i call the vet out - bearing in mind this is only the second day with symptoms?

Mine's been like this. It could be a virus or an allergy (have you changed food or bedding recently?). I would get the vet out either way as they might want to give anti-biotics if they are chesty. My vet recommended that he be put out (well wrapped up) as the more fresh air the better.

I haven't changed anything apart from clipping him a week ago - Its only a trace clip and he has warm rugs! He is fairly allergy prone (has had urticaria) but in the 5 1/2 years i've had him, this is a first!! Thanks for advice, i will check him this afternoon and probably get the vet tomorrow.
