Hi, my mothers older mare is coughing so badly when she eates her dinner, she doesn't seem to cough when out in the field or when she's eating hay, and she has her feed watered down very well, we've even changed it incase something was irritating her, and we've tried licks etc to help with bad coughs, it sounds a bit funny but the poor mare coughs so hard she passes wind every time!!!

My TB coughs when he eats his breakfast. It is because he has a dust allergy from the hay he's eaten over night in his stable. I'm not sure about the mechanics of it but it seems that putting his head down for breakfast dislodges all the gunk that has built up in his throat over night. he doesn't cough if I soak his hay well.

Have you tried soaking her hay?

well I do the morning shift at the yard, mum says she cant lift the hay if it's been soaked (she wont do anything that involves a bit of work!) so I dont really have that option, I may try buying her a feed bowl that hooks over the door to see if lifting her head makes it better then!

It really would be worth at least testing the soaked hay theory - raising the bucket seems like a bit of a quick fix to me if she really does have a dust allergy going on. It's not ideal.

You can cheat by shaking out the biscuits one by one and dousing with a watering can...presuming she eats off the floor? It doesn't work for a full-blown allergy but will make a difference if it is a bit milder.
