Hi, for the past week or so my gelding has been coughing when worked hard. Not excessively but doing a few great big coughs, almost like there is something stuck. He's had a bit of a snotty nose as well but is bright and healthy in himself. My mare lives with him and she doesn't have anything like this. Would you call the vet out or is there anything I can do and see if it gets better? Don't really think there is anything for the vet to see, they'll probs just charge me callout fee and give me antibiotics won't they? Oh, his temp is normal too.

Thanks.

At least worth ringing up and asking the vets advice. Mines good like that, can ring up and have a quick chat about concerns.

mne had a nasty cough - but hers was due to dust in her stable - and when worked (lunging) she would cough more - or walking and trotting in the field she would cough heavilly

she was reffered for a scope and her airway was inflaimed - put on ventapulmin and ordered to either live out or more ventilated stable - and use inhailers (!)
went for a more open barn stable and within 24 hours the cough was gone! :)

the weather is a pita and dosent help, nor dusty hay (do you soak your hay?) I no longer need to soak my hay nor is she on an inhailer anymore :)

Id have a think about the surroundings first :)

Sometimes at this time of the year it is the dry hay/haylage, we have a few on our yard the same, try soaking or working him on grass instead of a school, see if it helps.

Oh god, hope he doesn't need all that! He's living out atm and doesn't really have hay, apart from a nibble when he comes in to be ridden. His bed is straw that he stands on for about an hour so I guess it could be the dust in that but he's not in for that long! Thanks though, I'll do some investigations on his surroundings when I go down tonight :)

dont panic - it was a case of a dusty stable due to the hay/bedding etc.... she just needed a more ventilated environment which she has and the stable is perfect :)

its little things - like soaking hay and process of elimination - could even be an allergy?!
