I had my yearling bedded on straw he wasnt coughing then but he was really dirty, i swapped him on to Bedmax and he started coughing not sure if it was connected or not really, its quite a dry cough but he has it in the evening even after hes been out all day just as bad as he does in the morning, I started feeding him Cof-less by equine america about a week ago and it seems to of made a difference he is hardly coughing atall, but he has loads of snot! It is a whiteish coulour. Is this just all the gunk thats been making him cough coming out? I've taken his temeperature which is fine and he seems bright and fine in himself he is still eating fine and hasnt dropped weight, should I just monitor it, dont really want to call the vet out as he seems fine in himself. Thanks

What about soaking ir steaming his hay? this helps considerably. It can take a while for a dust allergy or cough to clear! If it doesnt clear then get vet out!

Hiya samps. If the only thing that has changed is his bedding then it's a fair bet that the change of bedding has caused it, though he could have been unlucky and just picked up a virus. Is he up to date with flu/tet? Couldn't you chuck his bedmax bed and reinstate the straw one, messy or not. If after a week the cough goes then you have your answer. If not, then it might need further investigation. Have his neighbours changed their bedding? Or is the hay store next to his stable? Sherlock Holmes hat on! Good luck.

I've just posted on coughing - I think there are lots of nasty bugs about at the moment, and in my case my boy is suspected to have a low grade infection.

Yearlings are unlikely to cough from bedding (COPD is generally an old horse thing), so I'd suspect a virus or infection.

Have you taken his temp?

Anti-biotics are required, our Kaf Tara yealing had about three weeks of being in, with the most disgusting snot coming out of his nose - really yuck !

Now he is turned out and is a really tough little fella but boy can he eat !

my boy had exactly these symptoms a few weeks ago - as he had a 'crakly' chest the vet gave me ventapolmin for the cough and subutolosin for the snot. he also had a ciourse of antibiotics. he is right as rain now - thank goodness as it was very expensive!
