My old mare has started with a cough. she has had to have here hay dry due to the cold weather, as they hay was freezing when i tried to wet it. She always has her hay wet. I have put her straight onto hayledge and was wondering if there was anything I could give her? Also how quickly should I notice a difference as I put her on the hayledge.

Thanks

Turbo's coughing just now with they hay. Unfortunately haylage isn't an option for me. He gets this every year and at the first sign of it I pop him onto Ventipulmin. Its expensive but I find works brilliantly and he doesn't need to be on it for very long.

my gelding used to cough all the time, i switch him over to haylage and i haven't heard him cough in months. when he was on hay i found NAF respritator to help

Watching this post- my old girl coughs but usually first thing in the morning when she is let out. Swapped to haylage last year and she improved. However she has to be on hay really due to having had laminitis. Have tried soaking it but have sourced some quite fine hay and she seems ok at the mo but would also welcome any tips.

Another vote for NAF Respirator. Also if you cant soak the hay because of this awful weather, put it into a large plastic bag, I use and Alfa A bag and tip a couple of kettles of boiling water onto it and close up the top of the bag quickly to keep the steam in and place something on top of the bag to keep it closed whilst you leave it for a short while to do something else.

I have been doing this and it works fine, you can also use a plastic dustbin if you have one and pop the lid on quickly to keep the steam in. They eat it fine and it stops putting water onto the yard which will quickly turn to ice as well.

My horse coughed just before Christmas. Gave her some Venos and it worked a dream, just syringed it twice a day into her mouth. Others recommended Benylin to me on here too and I only gave her Venos because it was what the shop had in at the time. Shes no longer coughing!!
