My son's 3 year TB/Clydie has developed a cough. She looks fine otherwise, active, bright, but does have some mucous. Especially after she spend some time running around the paddock with the other horses. The cough does seem to be more often with exercise and not noticeable as she just grazes.

She is on 24/7 turnout, no dust, only grass/ no hay ATM. We are in Autumn, and not many flowers in paddock (some but not much).

I am concerned as from what I read on the net and after talking to vet - coughs can be tricky things. He has given antiobiotics to try for 5 days, and if no sign of improvement by Monday, i will take her down to surgery to have her scoped, and see what they suggest.

Any comments or suggestions - experiences with your horse coughing please let me know, anything that may be helpful.

my boy developed a cough which brought my attention to an 'allergy' he had suddenly developed. He got sent into hospital, was scoped and had a lung wash and showed high levels of inflammatory cells which showed us it was an 'allergy'. the cough was shifted within a couple of days of ventipulmin but his breathing is permenantly affected. he got prescribed inhalers but they don't provide much relief.

my little one has chronic respiratory issues too and he coughs when the pollen count is high, its hot or when he's had a good face planting roll in the sandschool:rolleyes:

Oh that does not sound good, I am sorry to hear that, it sounds like he was treated promptly.

I guess we will have a better idea when she goes to vet, i have resigned myself to not expect much from the antibiotics

After 5 days on anitiobiotic powder, I took our mare in for scope as while cough had improved, still was present. The scope indicated that she has an infection, so we are continuing with antiobiotic powder for another 10-14 days, and reviewing after that.

I have not yet, but will also try the aloe vera as it cannot hurt and may help.

Um, for what its worth, mine was coughing a while back; and I saw on here that people had suggested Aloe Vera juice.

So I tried it - and after 10 days use, cough has gone!!

But you need to make sure you don't go for the cheap & cheerful juice, it IS worth spending a little more to get a decent brand.

Where do you get the Aloe Vera juice from? My mare always has a cough or two when I first pop her into trot, don't know if she's just clearing her airways etc or if there are underlying issues. She doesn't usually cough any other time, but noticed she was tonight in her stable whilst eating her dinner!

I would suppose a health food shop, they seem to have all those kind of goodies. i used to get apple cider vinegar for my horses from health food stores, although they are now on bigger pastures and do not feed hard feed these days.
