Ok, so here's our tale.
My mare is 4yr old 16hh tb x
She was broken in October 2012 on returning home she had a slight cough. It cleared within a few days. In January she went back to the trainer for 2 weeks whilst I was on holiday and returned home again with a cough. His stables are old, dusty/bit of mould here and there, and used sawdust bedding.
A fortnight ago I got the vet out, temperature was normal, I had checked it a few times and the vet did it. They said there was a slight wheeze on left lung. They gave a weeks worth of antibiotics and said see how she goes. After 4 days she's stopped coughing, so makes me think its an infection. I finished the antibiotics at 7 days then 3 days after finishing them the coughing starts again. Vet has now recommended a 20 day course. As she said with respiratory infections a week isn't enough. Or would you get her endoscoped? The trainer once made a comment he thought she was a "sickly" horse as she tires very quickly. Any experiences or advice would be great :) I haven't been riding her since the cough, would you ride her or not? She is eating and drinking normally. At home she's on dust extracted shavings bedding and Haylage
Just want her well soon :(

I would think ventipulmin may be the answer, it sounds like a COPD type of issue, you are doing the right thing with haylage it may be once she can get out more, ideally 24/7 it will clear up, exercise often helps to open the airways as long as they are not put under too much stress.

Our mare lived out for 2 years prior to coming to us when we stabled her we realised why She became wheezy and it got worse the vet came and said she had a really bad chest infection she gave antibiotics ventopulmin and sputolusin these got on top of the problem but she was still not quite right . So we looked for other ways of trying to help her we took a board out of the back of her stable to make it more airy we gave her soaked hay shaving bed which we cleaned out twice a day as urine is not good for horses with breathing problems and we put her on echaenacia to boost her immune system the one thing I found best of all was FEEDMARK clarity it is herbal and horse s love it . She still has wet hay and has never had a cough since . I hope this helps some times its small changes that can make a big difference and it is cheaper than the vet .
