As title - I'm thinking ahead to the summer when I won't have access to transport, apart from hiring a 3.5t box from a yard the other side of town.
My Mum drives a Land Rover Freelander so I'm wondering if that would be able to pull my 16.2hh tb in a trailer?
She's also considering getting an Evoque, but they don't look like they would work?
Also, my dad drives a passat, again, doesn't look like it could pull a trailer?
Sorry if I sound really dumb!

I have got a freelander and it pulls my 15.2 gelding in a double trailer absolutely fine. I would recommend it as a 4x4! Especially as I have never towed before!

Freelander will usually pull a trailer with 2 horses in it

What freelander is it?
What trailer is it?
What licence do you have if you will be towing it ?

Best way to find out if something has the towing capacity to tow something is to google the make and model of the vehicle with lgs towing capacity in the same search
example - vw passat estate 2007 kgs towing capacity

The issue with towing with a non 4x4 is the type of road surfaces you might be using

I might be talking poop but the gross weights have to be equal don't they? So it depends on the weight/ model of your freelander and the weight/ model of the trailer. You may have to get the trailer weight downgraded.

As in the gross weight of the towing vehicle can't be less than that of the trailer... but again i'm not 100%

Im pretty sure this isnt the case anymore, I could be wrong though :)

This not correct

The only reasons for down plating the MAM of a trailer is either to conform to B licence towing rules or for operator licence purposes

Many modern vehicles are designed to tow much more than they can actually weigh when fully loaded

A few 4x4s have a GVW of 2750 kgs but are designed to safely tow 3500 kgs

There was a few years where a particular freelander was not reliable and had lots of issues.

I was warned away from these ones. I would check all your questions with the right people local garage etc. These people would know your car better also check honest john website too, get your mum to check her car in the list. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/
