Could it be a splint?

I am looking to buy a 5 year old warmblood gelding... On initial viewing I noticed that on the hind leg there was a swelling on the cannon bone, like a small sausage!! The horse was thin, with low muscle tone and looked like it had been out of work.. The horses' flatwork was excellent & he popped over some jumps by the dealer & myself, there was no lameness evident.....

I am thinking that it is a splint bone? I dont want to have to go to vetting stage, if it will fail. I have tried to buy two horses previously and they have both failed the 5 stage vettings!! Aaargghh it is a nightmare!!!!

Can you help??? Any advice would be much appreciated??

A friend of mine had a 5 yr old DWB vetted as BSJA competition horse and it passed 5 stage with a small splint on front leg. The vet said it wouldnt cause any problems due to its location and the fact that it was totally healed.

Normally splints are small hard round lumps, on the splint bone. Is it hard? If its soft, it could be a new one, but I have never seen a sausage shaped one?
Have you asked the seller about it? If its an obvious lump, and they just pass it off, then personally I would walk away!! Have you a good trainer or instructor that could come and take a look at a second viewing?
