Owner of a pony on the yard was told by the vet 3 weeks ago during routine vaccinations that it needed to loose weight (14.2hh coloured cob, weigh-taped at 430kg). Pony is usually out 24/7 on grass and no other feed. vet advised stabling at night with a 3kg haynet. Pony is normally shod but owner took the shoes off just after the vet came as she is unable to ride for a few weeks and cant find anyone to exercise the pony. shoes are due to go back on early December. Over the last couple of days the pony has been coming out of the box hopping lame on a front leg - but after a few strides it walks normally and appears to be fine. This evening the pony had been in for about 5 hours during the day and came out hopping lame and then walked normally but its one shoulder ( on the opposite side to the lame leg) was very sweaty, although the other shoulder was normal.

would this be an indication of something sinister?? Pony is aged ten.
 
It could well have the start of laminitis, yes. My mare is worse the first few strides coming out of the box and then it wears off a bit. She has lami. Have you felt to see if he has any digital pulses?

Thanks Wagtail - i suspected as much. I cant feel any digital pulses. would the sweaty shoulder mean anything?

PaterNatt- the vet is going to be called tomorrow morning. The pony will be kept in til the vet arrives so the lameness can be demonstrated as it wears off after a couple of strides and she's then happy to buck and prance about without any problems.
