Does anyone know the position on claiming if you are injured riding someone elses horse, assume that horse had standard horse insurance, nothing specialised but does include public liability.

Can the rider claim for injury, loss of earning etc from the horse insurance.

Thanks

Check your policy, mine will cover for injuries and dental treatment, well it would if i'd added it in but i didnt :D

but is that cover for you on your horse or another rider on your horse? I believe horse insurance would not cover another rider, that's where their rider insurance would be needed.

My horse insurance includes insurance for the rider whether it be me or anyone i have given permission to ride, as long as the horse/pony is not being used for lessons (as in i'm being paid for them to ride it.)

My mum fell off my horse and broke her hip. I tried to claim for her loss of earnings against my policy an was told that as it was an accident that was hard to prove anyone was in the wrong I could claim anything sO worth reading small print

Ok, well the policy we used to offer worked like this:- If you had horse insurance and included personal accident cover then this would cover you or anyone given permission by you to ride you horse, provided no payment/reward exchanged hands. However, the PA cover was quite limited as only covered death or serious bodily injury. It would not cover a broken arm/leg for example. You could NOT claim under the liability section of the policy as if you were riding the horse with permission you would be treated essentially as the policyholder and you can't claim liability against yourself as it is only 3rd party liability you're covered for - ie damage to a vehicle or person unconnected with the handling/riding of the horse.

At the end of the day IF you are going to take the risk of riding someone else's horse and it is not through employment (well in fact even if it is part of your job) you should get your own personal accident/injury policy as, as we all know, horse riding is a risky sport.

Thank you all for the replies.

Can I just ask if it changes if you pay someone to ride for you.

Obviously I know the situation if you are hiring horses or running a school but thats commercial insurance.

It is definetely different if money changes hands for all standard personal use policies to my knowledge. For this you should have riders insurance including payment for services, essentially a freelance grooms/riders insurance. If you are not just asking out of curiosity ring up your insurance company/ a company like seib to get all the facts you can never be to careful about ensuring you are not leaving yourself open to be sued.
