Hi,
My 8YO Mare has been having a very bad week!! And I'm really not sure what it is...I have only had her 12 weeks so dont know enough about her to work it out...
I think she could be in season, but thought it could be a little late in the year.....
Basically, she has become totally obsessed with other horses, to the point she is almost oblivious to me....She charges around her stable to look out of any crack she can looking for other horses...she is peeing and pooing constantly, spinning around the stable but does settle at night when the yard is quiet...
I could cope with this, but now she has become a nightmare riding.....only this week, since Monday, she has started napping out hacking on her own, she she has never done this and she has hacked about 5 times a week in the past 12 weeks....and today, she started napping in the school....toward the other horses...
It has been so long since I owned a Mare.....I know they all behave differently....but does this sound like the behaviour of a Mare in season? and is it possible for her to be in season in december?
Please help,

Thanks!!

Although they theoretically shouldn't be in season in December I was watching one of our mares yesterday and she was peeing and "winking" quite a lot - she's also been flirting with the boys she is turned out with - hussy! (Which no doubt is going to result in a ripped rug if she carries on!) I was quite surprised but she was definitely showing signs of being in season.

Thanks!

I think it could be seasonal and flirting!

However, it is strange that I have had her 12 weeks and she has not behaved this bad before - Surely she would have had a season in the past 12 weeks.....Although, I guess I bought her at the end of October which would have been the end of her natural cycle....so maybe she's having a random one!

Could nappiness be a sign of a horse in season....? Not wanting to leave the other horses?

well my mare has been showing signs of being in season this week and with all the grumpiness that goes with it! See if she settles down again and if she does you have your answer.

My mare is still coming into season as well.

YO reckons it's because the lights go on at 06.30 and it's still 'light' at 5.30pm so she has longer 'days'- it's daylight/Spring!

Yes - and yes! Some mares cycle all year round! And some mares will only just be in transitional phase (when the seasons may be more noticeable than at other times.)

With luck, everything will be back to normal by Wednesday. If not, you'll have to consider other possibilities.

Thanks everyone...

I feel better hearing all your comments......fingers X'd weds she is back to herself and I havent landed Myself a total nutter!!
