Evening all, just a quick question for you if you dont mind!?!?!?

I've never really noticed before, by mare mare has started stripping the tress of bark! I only noticed today because she came in with a cut on her face so i went to investigate, and found the whole lower park of a tree stripped of bark! As i walked a little further down the fence line, i found loads of trees stripped of bark!

Is she be lacking somethig in her diet?!?

All help gratefully received!

Thanks, Kerry and Millie

In summer quite a few horses do this on my yard... I know this is not much help

But they do not seem to be lacking, I think sometimes it is natural for them to look for things they would perhaps munch on in the wild. I know someone who puts a log in with their horse so he can chew it.

Have you tried putting a vitamin/mineral or salt lick in the field. Wood chewing can certainly be a sign that she is lacking in something.

My horse loves gnawing on wood (monster) so have given him a broad spec vit/min supplement and salt licks in field and stable and he still does it grrrrrr- I do have a severe lack of grass and think he does it coz hes bored.

Could be due to a few things like, lack of fibre, boredom, lack of minerals although I would expect earth eating for that or perhaps she has simply aquired a taste for it! What kind of trees are they? Mairi.

My horse loves a chew on the bark and he has plenty of grass and is on an all round min/vit supplement. I believe that horses do seek out other sources of food and do not worry about it.
