Could these spots in my horses mouth be a fungal infection? rather than just petechiae hemorrhages. Does anyone know anything about or have any experience of fungal infections in horses mouths, in particular any that might affect other mucous membranes or other places as well as the mouth? These have been in my horses mouth since at least March, they never disappear and the ones in the first photo have never changed. I thought these spots were to do with a hypersensitivity to drugs reaction my horse is having but earlier this week discovered one of my other horses has similar things going on and that horse has had no drugs. I wondered about fungus spots after thinking of goldfish with fungus spots! Also in vet. Thanks for any replies.

I would say well spotted, most people would not.

Can't you email these photos to your vet? They probably won't even charge to have a look, and if they think it is something that needs further investigation then they can arrange that.

Completely agree - hell, I wouldn't know what my own mouth looks like - that's what dentists are for. When was the horses teeth last done? Oral thrush tends to be a white film covering the tongue/ throat. Definitely worth further investigation.

I found these back in March while looking for a reason why she keeps holding shavings in her mouth. Thought they were a drug reaction (petechiae hemorrhages) along with other things, but most of the other things come and go whereas these have stayed all along. She does sometimes have what looks like thin white paste on her tongue which I can see when she is yawning. Shes had a lot of antibiotics and other drugs for teeth problems. Teeth were looked at two weeks ago. Think I will ask vet if there is anyway of testing them to see if they might be something fungal.

No experience of this, however thrush of the mouth produces the white film on tongue and antibiotics can trigger thrush....certainly in pregnant woman, so could also be the case for horses.

Again I have no experience but just a thought.

They certainly don't look fungal to me from my knowledge of human mouths. My first thought with the first picture was viral rash but not so with the second picture. However, a viral rash would only be present for 10 -14 days before receeding which doesn't match your history.

The first picture looks as if there is more bruising round the lesions but not what I would class as classical petechial haemorrhages (think love bite!) to my eye. The second picture looks more like that you are seeing the minor salivary glands but they do seem to be more stained than normal.

To see the minor salivary glands in your own mouth, pull your lower lip out and dry it, then look in the mirror at different angles as you should start to see them if not watch for small saliva beads that will form (but very slowly!) where the glands are.

Don't know if this helps you or not!
