Me and my friend went to see a horse today, all went well. Friend rode her, really sweet genuine mare was all looking good. We found some bald flaky skin in her armpit area, could it be Saroids? Her owner said she had never noticed them before. The photos aren't the best, only had my mobile. She is a cracking mare, would be a good confidence giver for my friend, but personally I don't think I would buy a horse with sarcoids after the trouble I have had.

Looks like it could well be. My missing cobblet had one before and it looked a bit like that.. best to get a vet to check it out and if it is to get it treated.Theyre no big deal tho.

Very possibly. Damn things are so varied in appearance they are often discounted as something else. I agree - get a vet to check.

Looks like sarcoids to me, how can the owner not have noticed even if she did not know what it was the area around the elbow is looking rather bald.

Yup it looks like one to me. A friend recently bought a youngster with a similar looking one, and despite vet treatment it has got worse and worse. Now weeping, sore and massive. She now looks to have at least 3 more. Personally, I wouldn't ever buy one with sarcoids because you never know the outcome.

I myself have already made the mistake of buying a horse with a tiny sarcoid, that has then turned into a sarcoid the size of a tennis. I have had it treated 3 times & still keeps coming back. My friend said she will get the vet to check it out. Such a shame she's a lovely mare. There seems to be so many horses with sarcoids.

I think the second photo is, yes. I certainly wouldn't trust it not to be unless a sarcoid expert like Prof Knottenbelt had cleared it as not being one. What a shame if the mare is spot on in every other way, but they are a risk, I agree with you, especially near the girth like that one.

I have seen something similar on one of mine when he used to be shod and it was his shoe sticking into his armpit when he lay down. There's a chance it might be something like that, perhaps?

Hmm Never thought of that, The one does look like a rub, I had a close look and there is short little hairs growing evenly there. She said that my friend could have her on trial. For a month if she wants. Maybe worth it to see if it is a rub.
