Could this be arthritis?

My horse is 15 (and done an awful lot of circles in his time) he's now complaining about his off hind - there is no heat, lumps, bumps, swellings and both legs/hips look exactly the same. When brought out of the stable he obviously 'carries' his off hind but after getting going on he gets better. I've run fingers down his spine to see if he flinches thinking maybe back, and the farrier can't find anything. He did get tangled up a few weeks ago in the electric tape (forgot to stop!!) could it be a muscular thing or the onset of arthritis - how do I know, how long will it take to get better. He's on field rest and is quite happy about this.

How did he get tangled up? Was it round his hind leg? Did you see him flailing around or struggling? If so, yes it may be a pulled muscle. From the description of how he carries his hind it could be signs of spavin i.e. arthritis in his hock which can start at his age, especially if he's done a lot of work. Keeping him out and mobile will help.

If it continues get your vet to check him over.
